COPING WITH CHAOS
-
In the old days, I would take a fast refreshing jeepney ride in the evening from Governor Forbes along Dapitan to Quiapo for ten centavos, arrive in five minutes, and buy a huge tasty siopao for a peso. Life was simpler and there was always time.
-
Today, I would take the same ride in the evening for seven pesos, breathe a lot of carbon monoxide before I arrive in 30 minutes, if I was lucky, and buy siopao half the size, with more starch than meat at quadruple the price. It is an economic principle – life degrades fast as population grows fast.
-
In the 60s, with a P300 salary, one could hang out with friends for beer three times a week and have extra money for mundane purchases. Today, a salary of P20,000 is too small for basic necessities. Life has become expensive and complex.
-
We are also victims of chemically mass-produced food. In the old days, cancer was rare. Today, it kills more per day than in World War II. Expensive ‘effective’ medicine are discontinued after being discovered to be cancer-causing ten years after they are released in the market.
-
We are all victims of a fast-shrinkng world. Time is getting cramped. We are so busy yet so bored. Half of our lives is spent on endless traffic and queues. We may not know it, but we are going into an uncontrollable tailspin.
-
There is so much to do and we have no time, yet we really have done nothing meaningful or substantial. We work twice as hard for half the money. We wallow in ever-increasing tasks that make us cold unthinking robots. Globalization and Internet have changed our lives. Just getting the news from the newspaper or from television, we realize how much conflict and chaos are percolating everywhere.

In the old days, one could quietly sneak into a church and say a prayer. Today, there is no or little time for prayer.
-
So how do we cope with chaos in our lives? We need to step back from the rush and the crowds. Here are some unsolicited prescriptions –
-
THE TEN PRECEPTS
1
start feeling and stop thinking;
2
create an inner garden where you can take a retreat from the world and be by yourself, where time is not important, where you can rest from making money that buys less and less, where you can stop worrying; where you can enjoy simple beautiful things like sunsets or music or your grandson;
3
be more spiritual and less material, find time to pray; the Lord will help you;
4
be simple, stick to the basics in terms of material needs; cheaper shoes, cellphones, five shirts is enough, some have 4 dozens, more than half unused;
5
be frugal, eat less, more vegetables and fruits than meat, do not over-eat, don’t overspend, live within your means, tear your credit cards;
6
remove yourself from all communication devices when you are in your inner garden; it takes time for waves to die down in a swimming pool after the last swimmer has gone; achieve the wave-less mirror-like pool in your mind; give it time, it is not instant; it is hard to forget problems even for a while;
7
find meaning somehow and avoid absurdity or irrelevance;
8
love and relate to people; make them a source of joy to cater to, talk to, dialogue with, share with; make your day by giving to someone;
9
be gentle to yourself and to others; get angry less, be more patient, anger clogs your aortic valves; gentleness unclogs them; laugh at the obnoxious and arrogant, don’t let them give you ulcers, or should I say, don’t give yourself ulcers because of them; who are they to make your life miserable;
10
be humble when people insult or castigate you, whether you are to blame or not; you will find that it feels good and refreshing in the end to be humble; when arrogance becomes a habit, it is a disease, it can even cause cancer.

In all there are just a few magic words – the three S’s –
-
simplicity, sharing, sensitivity.
-
Believe me, then can you cope with all the ever-increasing chaos the world will offer you.

THE AMAZING SECRET OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY

Above is the title of a book written by an Austrian woman, who was visited regularly by souls in purgatory. This article is based on that book and on interviews of the author MARIA SIMMA by Sister Emmanuel of Medjugorje.

In 1940, at 4 a.m., a ‘spirit’ in human form appeared to Maria Simma at her home in Sonntag, Vorarberg Mountains, Austria. Her spiritual director said he knew the spirit was from purgatory when he requested Maria to have three masses celebrated for him so that he would be ‘delivered’. Maria was subsequently visited regularly by many souls in purgatory. They pleaded for masses, rosaries or stations of the cross to be said for them to atone for their sins and free them from suffering.

“THE MASS IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE (IN ATONING FOR SINS) BECAUSE IT IS JESUS WHO OFFERS HIMSELF OUT OF LOVE FOR US, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OFFERING”.

Maria told the story of a couple who died almost at the same time. The woman died while getting an abortion. The man led a relatively devout life, and went to church often. To her surprise, the ‘sinner’ woman was already in heaven while the devout man was still suffering in purgatory. Maria found out the woman had deep repentance while the man always criticized others and always complained them.

“RELATIONSHIP SINS”, SINS AGAINST OTHERS, DEMAND GREAT PUNISHMENT IN PURGATORY,

such as unforgiveness, refusal to make peace or reconcile, slander, calumny, hardness of heart, hostility, vengeance, sins against charity or love of neighbor, bitterness, etc.

Maria told “the story of a woman she knew very well. This lady died and was in Purgatory, in the most terrible Purgatory, with the most atrocious sufferings. And when she came to see Maria, she explained why. She had had a female friend. Between them rose a great enmity, caused by herself. She had maintained this enmity for years and years, even though her friend had many times asked for peace, for reconciliation. But each time, she refused. When she fell gravely ill, she continued to close her heart, to refuse the reconciliation offered by her friend, right up to her deathbed.”
Relationships are the greatest source of suffering even on earth. The pain of cancer or arthritis is easier to bear than the pain of bad relationships –
hatred or unexpressed bitterness hidden deep within us for years, because

HATE CONSUMES THE SOUL AND IS ITS OWN PUNISHMENT.

IN THE SAME WAY, PEOPLE WITH “RELATIONSHIP VIRTUES”, LOVE FOR OTHERS, HAVE THE GREATEST CHANCE OF GOING STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN. LOVE COVERS A MULTITUDE OF SINS.”

Maria said, “We must do a great deal for the souls in purgatory, for they help us in return. We must have much humility.
-
HUMILITY IS THE GREATEST WEAPON AGAINST EVIL. HUMILITY DRIVES EVIL AWAY. PRIDE IS EVIL’S GREATEST TRAP.”

“Contrition is very important. The sins are forgiven, in any case, but
there remains the consequences of sins.”

At the moment of death, “The Lord gives several minutes to each one in order to regret his sins and to decide: I accept, or I do not accept to go and see God. Then we see a film of our lives. I knew a man who believed in the Church’s teachings, but not in eternal life. One day, he fell gravely ill and slid into a coma. He saw himself in a room with a board on which all his deeds were written, the good and the bad. Then the board disappeared as well as the walls of the room, and it was infinitely beautiful. Then he woke up from his coma, and decided to change his life. “

MARIA SAYS WE CAN ASK THE LORD TO BE ABLE TO SUFFER ON EARTH IN ORDER TO ATONE FOR SINS AND NOT SUFFER IN PURGATORY AND TO GO STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN.

HOW TO PRAY FOR YOUR LOVED ONES IN PURGATORY.

MAKE A LIST OF FRIENDS AND RELATIVES WHO HAVE DIED. PUT IT IN YOUR WALLET. WHEN YOU GO TO MASS, AFTER COMMUNION AND MEDITATION, READ AND PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE LIST. IN RETURN, THOSE WHO ATTAIN HEAVEN BECAUSE OF YOUR PRAYERS WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR SUFFERING AND CRISIS. DO THE SAME AFTER SAYING THE ROSARY OR AN OUR FATHER AND THREE HAIL MARYs.
