DIMATALING, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR IN THE ISLAND OF MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES. EARLY 70S. CHRISTIAN ILONGGOS AND MUSLIM MAGUINDANAOS HAVE BEEN KILLLNG EACH OTHER AND BURNING EACH OTHERS’ HOMES FOR A DECADE. NO ONE REALLY KNEW WHO STARTED IT ALL. IT DID NOT MATTER WHO STARTED IT. WHAT MATTERED WAS VENGEANCE AND HATRED REIGNED SUPREME. THE REFUGEES CONSISTING OF INNOCENT WOMEN AND CHILDREN, CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS, HAVE LEFT. IT WAS NOW A GHOST TOWN, A ‘NO MAN’S LAND’. ONLY THE BRAVE AND THE STUBBORN DARED TO STAY. ARMED CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS AND MUSLIM REBELS CAME IN AND OUT IN A GAME OF HIDE AND SEEK.

IN THE CHRISTIAN SECTOR WAS A FILIPINO MEDICAL MISSION SISTER, JOSEPHINE, SISTER JO FOR SHORT, AND A BURLY SIX-FOOT BELGIAN COLUMBAN PRIEST, FATHER SEAN, CLINGING LIKE OYSTERS TO A TINY BAMBOO CHAPEL AS IF IT WAS THE FORT OF ALAMO THEY WOULD DIE FOR. THIS WAS THEIR HOME AND PARADISE, AMONG THE SEVENTY-ODD CHRISTIAN SETTLERS IN THEIR ‘PARISH’. A PLATOON OF ILONGGO SOLDIERS LINGERED, WAITING FOR THE MUSLIMS REBELS TO STAGE ANOTHER ATTACK.

AT THE CHAPEL, WHILE PRAYING, SR. JO NOTICED A TINY MOUSE. SHE SCREAMED AND GOT UP TO THE PEW. HER SCREAM COULD BE HEARD UP TO THE MUSLIM SECTOR. FR. SEAN RAN FROM THE OUTSIDE, SHOOING THE MOUSE AWAY.

FR. SEAN

You should be ashamed of yourself. A tiny mouse and you’re in panic. What more if Muslim rebels barge in? Sister, be brave, please.

SR. JO

Father, I’m scared of those things.

FR. SEAN

Alright, alright, calm down. It’s gone.

SERGEANT TOTO STAGGERED OUT INTO THE STREETS, DEAD DRUNK. HE FIRED HIS ARMALITE INTO THE AIR. EVERYONE SCAMPERED TO THEIR HOMES. WINDOWS AND DOORS WERE QUICKLY SLAMMED SHUT, JUST LIKE IN THE AMERICAN WESTERN MOVIES, ONLY THIS WAS NOT A MOVIE BUT REALITY.

FR. SEAN

It’s that stupid sergeant again, dead drunk every afternoon, making trouble. You stay here, sister. I will take care of him.

BEFORE FR. SEAN COULD MOVE, SR. JO WAS OUT IN THE STREET AND SLAMMED THE DOOR TO HIS FACE.

SR. JO

Oh no you don’t. I will take care of this. You want to get killed? He won’t touch a hair of my head because I am Ilonggo like him. You, he won’t hesitate to finish a magazine on you. You think he will respect your nice white habit or six-foot frame? You’re a foreigner, remember. Foreigners are barbecued here by Christian and Muslim fanatics. (SPEAKING WITH ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY) Stay!!

FR. SEAN FELL SILENT, WATCHING FROM INSIDE THE CHAPEL AS THIS FOUR-AND-A-HALF FOOT NUN WENT STRAIGHT WITHOUT HESITATION TO THE DRUNK SOLDIER, WHO BY NOW WAS LOADING A NEW MAGAZINE.

(SHOUTING IN THE ILONGGO DIALECT, HANDS ON HIPS) You should be ashamed of yourself, scaring people. They are not the enemy. You want to kill someone, go to the Muslim sector.

SGT. TOTO POINTED THE GUN IN REFLEX AT SR. JO.

SR. JO

Go ahead. Kill me now so that Lieutenant Reyes will roast you like a pig later. Go ahead. I am not scared of you. I am scared of mice, but not of drunk Ilonggo soldiers.

SGT. TOTO

(BOWING HIS HEAD IN SHAME, MEEK AS A LAMB, THEN SOBBING). I can’t stand it anymore, sister. I want to die.

SR. JO PLACES A HAND GENTLY ON HIS SHOULDER.

SR. JO

Okay, okay, put that gun away. Come on, let’s sit and talk.

THEY SIT ON A BENCH OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE STORE. SGT. TOTO WHIPS OUT A FLAT BOTTLE OF RUM, BUT BEFORE HE CAN TAKE A SWIG, SR. JO GRABS IT FROM HIM AND TAKES A LONG SWIG. SHE RECTHES AND ALMOST THROWS UP. SGT. TOTO LAUGHS ALOUD. THEY BOTH LAUGH.

SR. JO

I need this more than you, but what is it, unleaded gas? (SHE RETURNS THE BOTTLE TO HIM).

-

SGT. TOTO

(TEARS SILENTLY FLOWING DOWN HIS CHEEKS). I miss my baby. She’s just two years old.

SR. JO

Go ahead. Let it out. The more you keep it inside, the more you finish magazines into the air. Tears are easier to shed than bullets.

LONG SILENCE.

-

SGT. TOTO

Did you not get scared when I pointed my gun at you?

-

SR. JO

Not really. I know you are a gentle person deep inside. Lt. Reyes admires you. They call it battle fatigue. How long have you been in the war zone?

SGT. TOTO

Eight months.

-

SR. JO

A lousy eight months and you’re going crazy. I’ve been here three years.

SGT. TOTO

But you don’t face the enemy.

-

SR. JO

I face them more than you. I have bandaged their wounds. What is more face-to-face than that?

-

SGT. TOTO

You helped the enemy? You helped rebels? Wow, you should be ashamed of yourself.

SR. JO

Well, let me tell you the story.

SGT. TOTO

Say, I know you. Now, I remember. You were the nun they were talking about in Pagadian, the nun who takes in soldiers and rebels. I have heard about you. You are famous in the 6^th Brigade, the nun who makes peace in war zones.

SR. JO

Be quiet. Let me tell you the story then.

SR. JO GRABS THE BOTTLE AND TAKES A SWIG AND RETCHES ONCE MORE.

FLASH BACK.

-

ONE YEAR EARLIER. THE SAME CHAPEL. SR. JO WAS ALONE. FR. SEAN WENT TO PAGADIAN TO BUY SUPPLIES. IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT, SHE WAS AWAKENED BY GUN SHOTS FROM AFAR. BUT SHE WAS USED TO IT. IT HAPPENED SO OFTEN. SHE IGNORED IT AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP. LATER, SOMEONE WAS BANGING AT THE DOOR. THREE REBELS WERE CARRYING THEIR COMMANDER USMAN, MORTALLY WOUNDED, BLEEDING PROFUSELY ON THE LEFT SHOULDER. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. NO WORDS EXCHANGED. IMMEDIATELY SHE WENT TO WORK. IT TOOK HER ONE HOUR TO REMOVE THE BULLET, AND CLEAN AND BANDAGE THE WOUND. THEN SHE FED THE REBELS.

CMDR. USMAN

I am deeply grateful, sister.

SR. JOSEPINE

Think nothing of it. That is my work. I am a medical mission sister. Our mission is to heal.

CMDR. USMAN

You did not hesitate to help me. I am amazed how you can help your enemy. You even feed the enemy. The soldiers will not like that.

SR. JO

What enemy? I don’t see enemies. I see only a wounded man. The soldiers can think what they want. They cannot touch me.

CMDR. USMAN

Soldiers are known to rape and abuse even Christians, am I right, sister?

-

SR. JO

Extremely right commander.

-

CMDR. USMAN

The name is Commander Usman. I have great respect for you. If the soldiers abuse you, I want you to send a messenger to the Muslim side. I will protect you from them.

SR. JO

That’s very nice of you, Commander Usman, but I can handle them better than you, believe me. I don’t use bullets, just my habit (SHE FLICKS HER SLEEVE).

CMDR. USMAN

The offer stands anyway, just in case there are crazy drunk soldiers around.

SR. JO

My gratitude, commander. I am deeply honored. I will remember your offer.

SUDDENLY FIVE SOLDIERS BARGED IN. SOLDIERS AND REBELS WERE FACE TO FACE. THEY COCKED THEIR GUNS AND POINTED THEM AT EACH OTHER. SR. JO QUICKLY WENT TO THE MIDDLE.

SR. JO

Oh no, not in my house. Keep your war outside my house. My house is a medical mission for all who are hurt, Muslims or Christians.

-

THERE WAS A LONG UNEASY SILENCE. LT. REYES WAS BLEEDING PROFUSELY FROM A GUNSHOT WOUND IN THE UPPER RIGHT THIGH. THEY KEPT GUNS POINTED AT EACH OTHER.

SR. JO

(WITH ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY). Lt. Reyes, Commander Usman, I order you to respect my home. If you cannot, then kill me first before you shoot each other down.

-

LONG UNEASY SILENCE. CMDR. USMAN WAS THE FIRST TO ORDER HIS MEN TO PUT DOWN THEIR GUNS. LT. REYES FOLLOWED.

CMDR. USMAN

I think it is time for us to go.

SR. JO

Yes, commander, go. Lt. Reyes, promise me you will not pursue them.

LT. REYES

How can we, when I am wounded?

CMDR. USMAN

Sister, please remember my promise. Thank you for everything.

SR. JO

I will remember.

THE REBELS QUIETLY AND CALMLY FILED OUT. SISTER HELPED LT. REYES TO A SEAT AND BEGAN TO TEND TO HIS WOUND AS HIS MEN LINGERED AROUND. LT. REYES WAS ABOUT TO SPEAK.

SR. JO

Not a word, lieutenant. I know what you want to say. I have no war in my heart. Can you understand that? You cannot force your world of bullets into my world of love. This is one tiny space in this large island where there is no hate or vengeance. It is my space. Can we keep it that way?

LT. REYES

Yes, sister. I understand. But I want you to send a messenger to me if the rebels come to disturb you. I will protect you.

SR. JO

Sounds familiar.

LT. REYES

What’s that again, sister?

-

SR. JO

Nothing, lieutenant. I just said we are one big family.

SGT. TOTO

(IN TEARS) Thank you sister for relieving me of my burden inside me. Now, I am beginning to understand your world. I wish I can visit your world often. In my world, I am ready to explode.

SR. JO

You are there right now, Sgt, in my inner garden, right this moment. You are welcome anytime. But you must understand, you have your own inner garden. I know this from the way Lieutenant Reyes talks about you.

SGT. TOTO

Yes, that long lost inner garden, I must find it again.

SR. JO

You have already found it.

-

SGT. TOTO AND SR. JO BECAME THE BEST OF FRIENDS. SGT. TOTO WOULD ENTER HER INNER GARDEN MANY TIMES IN THAT NO-MAN’S-LAND WHICH HAD SURPRISINGY MANY INNER GARDENS HIDDEN AMONG THE VIOLENCE AND THE HATRED. SR. JO ALSO ENTERED SGT. TOTO’S INNER GARDEN AND THAT GAVE HER SOLACE AND COMFORT AND SPIRITUAL STRENGTH SHE NEEDED AS MUCH AS SGT. TOTO.

A TINY NUN SCARED OF A TINY MOUSE BUT NOT OF REBELS AND SOLDIERS IS THE ESSENCE OF VALOR IN OUR STORY. A TINY NUN WITH A HEART SO BIG AND STRONG, YET NO ONE COULD SEE EXCEPT THOSE WHO SOMEHOW, BY ACCIDENT PERHAPS, STUMBLED INTO HER GARDEN – REBEL COMMANDERS, BATTLE-FATIGUED SERGEANTS, WOUNDED LIEUTENANTS. A TINY NUN WHO TRANSFORMED WAR AND HATRED INTO PEACE AND HARMONY.

of peace and understanding that persist

We are highlighting this testimonial that was published

in prayer request bulletin 32, entry no. 47

Two years ago, my father was hospitalized due to myocardial infarction. He was in the ICU with respirator for 2 weeks. His doctors informed us that they have to wean him from the respirator since infection is starting to seep or they have to place the tube through his throat (tracheotomy).

-

For days, they were trying to wean him but he just could not sustain breathing on his own even for 3 hours. The day before he was do to have tracheotomy, my auntie happened to mention the healing she received after going to Mo. Ignacia Healing Center.

-

Without knowing how to go there, my sister and I drove to Novaliches the following day. When we were near Bagumbong, we asked several (almost 10) people for directions. Funny, but all of them seemed to know where the Center is. They were giving us very detailed directions, yet after more than an hour of driving, we have not arrived at the Center. We were about to give up and go back to the hospital, but we just found ourselves right in front of the Center. Now I believe that God has been “testing” us to see if we were intent in going. We were able to attend the healing session.

When we were asked to hold the part of your body you want healed, I took out the picture of my Dad and put my fingers over his heart. With eyes closed, I was earnestly praying to God for his healing. When I tried to open my eyes, the picture of my Dad looked smokey. I was afraid that he turned for the worst so I prayed hard. I did not realized that I was really weeping, trying to tell the Lord that I believe that at that moment He was healing my Dad.

After several minutes, I received a message on my cellphone. Nervously, I read the message and I almost shouted. My Dad was able to breathe on his own, without the respirator, for more than 4 hours already! However, the doctors said that they have to wait for at least 24 hours to see if he can actually be totally removed from the respirator.

-

I thank the Lord and prayed to continue to heal him. We were not prepared for the bathing with holy water. After the bathing, I was totally wet from head to foot, without any change of clothes. When we were asked to go and thank the Lord, 2 at a time, I was with a mother carrying a little girl.

-

With eyes closed, I thanked the Lord. When I heard the mother said, “Anak, ayan si Jesus. Mag thank you ka dahil pinagaling ka niya”, I opened my eyes and looked at the child. I had goosebumps all over my body when I saw steam coming out of the child’s head. I did not know what it meant, then. I thought that perhaps the child was indeed healed. I was hoping that I also had that steam coming out of my head. So I went home dripping wet but with a lighter heart because I truly believed that God, through the intercession of Mo. Ignacia, has heard our prayer.

We have been driving for about 15 minutes when my cellphone rang. It was my other sister. The doctors have removed my Dad’s respirator. Why? He still was supposed to try breathing on his own for 24 hours! According to my sister, even the nurses were surprised when at around 3pm that afternoon, the same time when we were bathing with holy water, the doctor called and ordered that his respirator be removed!

GOD HEALED MY FATHER! From then on, he gradually improved. He was there with my Mom when they celebrated their Golden (50th) Wedding Anniversary in August 31, 2008. He was with us last Christmas, and we are praying to God that he will still be with us when he celebrates his 85th birthday in September this year. I am residing in Iloilo. Everytime I go to Manila, I try to visit the Center to thank the Lord, and Mo. Ignacia, for all the blessing. May GOD be praised.

This article describes messages to the world that Sister Raquel says she has received in the last few months.

-

In 1991, Sister Raquel Reodica, RVM, received her gift of healing a week after the Mount Pinatubo eruption, one of the biggest disasters in Philippine history. A typhoon scattered the volcanic ash in the stratosphere all the way to the Antarctic, disrupting data of a US global-warming research station there. The station reported that the effect was so immense that there was a momentary cooling of the Earth.

-

During that week, a woman she had never met, approached her, and, claiming to see visions, told her she would eventually receive a second gift, the gift of prophecy, or the ‘third eye’. First, she found the notion preposterous, then later scary. In September 2009, close to two decades later, this gift of prophecy began to manifest itself during an equally-deadly disaster period – three consecutive typhoons, Ondoy, Ramil and Pepeng, which rendered hundreds of thousands homeless in Metro-Manila, Baguio and Pangasinan.

On September 25, 2009, one day before Ondoy swept through Metro-Manila, Sister Raquel unlocked the gates of the adoration chapel of the Mother Ignacia Healing Ministry at 6 a.m., and discovered pools of oil which mysteriously appeared on the marble floor. She collected the oil in a towel and used if for healing. There were dramatic cases of instant healings. For one, Edwin Reyes, afflicted with brain tumor, within days, stood up from his wheelchair and started jumping and dancing, which was caught on camera. See part 2 below.

When typhoon Ramil threatened Ilocos days after Ondoy, Sister Raquel and chaplain Father Tiofilo fell on their knees in prayer, pleading to the Lord to spare the Philippines. Curiously, two high pressure areas sandwiched Ramil, which weakend into a tropical depression and veered towards Taiwan.

During the Pinatubo eruption, the situation was exactly the same. Philvolcs reported that a second eruption was imminent when steam vents were increasing at the crater. Sister Raquel and a handul of RVM nuns prayed for the Lord to spare the Philippines. That second eruption never occurred. Skeptics, of course, argued it was not prayers, just Nature. But other believed prayers pre-empted a second disaster. The power of prayer is the theme of Sister Raquel’s messages described here. Was it an odd coincidence that Ondoy unleashed was followed by Ramil averted, just like the first eruption unleashed and a second averted? Does this reveal a God of mercy and punishment all at once?

On November 6, 2009, a First Friday, oil appeared once again, more profuse than ever. This time the pools of oil were neatly positioned in nine equidistant lines from the back of the chapel to the altar. High resolution photos were taken by the Sisters before the oil dried up.

This healing oil became the basis of Sister Raquel’s claim of messages from the Lord for the world. She did not hear ‘voices’, she simply ‘felt’ the messages overwhelm her consciousness, which she found hard to described.

It must be clarified that in 2001, Sister Raquel spoke of impending earthquakes in the Philippines. She gave a broad time period, not an exact date. But by the time the news hit front page, an exact date given by a woman who frequented the healing center, was erroneously attributed to her. When no earthquake came on that date, she became the subject of criticism. Her published reply was too late, the damage was done. Today, she is willing to take the risk of facing critics because she says the Lord wants these message conveyed.

Sister Raquel’s emerging messages are as follows. First, the nine lines of oil refer to nine years (2009 to 2018) that the Lord is giving mankind to change its ways. This a ‘deadline’. Second, Sister spoke of the urgency for the rich, comprising 3% of Philippine population to give to the poor which comprises about 70%. This virtue of sharing is not an option, it is an obligation. Sister says the Lord is not requesting but demanding that everyone must start helping others, praying harder, and renewing lives in Him. She cites the gentle and harsh words of Jesus in Matthew 25:35 – “Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom, for I was hungry and you gave me food … Depart from Me, you accursed, into eternal fire for I was hungry and you gave me no food.”

Third, Sister cites the third secret of Fatima, mentioning a ‘global earthquake’ occurring worldwide simultaneously if man does not change his ways. She cautions that her aim is not to sow panic but to sow prayer. It took the Church decades to finally reveal the third secret in fear the harsh predictions would sow panic. Alas, there was no panic. We have all but forgotten the terrible forewarnings in the third secret.

Fourth, sister spoke of the power of prayer which can avert disasters. Disasters are ‘negotiable’. We can bargain with prayer and good deeds. She cites how the Lord spared the affluent city of Nineveh because it repented in its decadent ways. She cites how the Lord would have spared Sodom and Gomorrah if one holy person there was found there. Alas, they were burnt to the ground.

She also cites the story of how a small Jesuit resident just a few hundred meters from ground zero of the Hiroshima nuclear blast in World War II remained mysteriously untouched. At that time, the residents were praying the rosary.

Fifth, certain pools of oil were shaped like the map of the Philippines. But the Visayas was oddly found separate from Luzon and Mindanao. Sister says this means the Visayas could be spared because the Lord is pleased. Is this because of the annual celebration of Sinulog dedicated to the Santo Nino or Holy Child?

Sixth, Sister Raquel explains that there were ‘three rays of light’ falling on the Philippine map (the pools of oil shaped into its map). She says, “It is not an accident that we have millions of OFWs scattered worldwide. The Lord will use them to evangelize the whole world. The have a role to play.” Filipino priests among OFWs have ‘a challenging work’.

Sister clarifies that people are not obliged to believe her. Faith is a gift and belief is of the free will. But there is nothing to lose in listening to the warnings, old warnings we have forgotten (the third secret) and everything to gain in renewing life in the Lord.

Today is an era of global warming, intensifying typhoons and hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis, forest fires and floods, droughts, and swine and avian flu. Legalized abortion is now financed by governments. Materialism has intensified into a plague that haunts rich and poor countries. Corporate greed has triggered a global financial meltdown. It is in this backdrop that these messages of prayer and renewal are being conveyed.
