TAMING CHINA, THE FIERCE BEAR * We have to be gentle but strong

TAMING CHINA, THE FIERCE BEAR
We have to be gentle but strong, benevolent and belligerent all at once.

We Filipinos are in a dilemma how to deal with China. He can bully us around because we are small. We can fight back but it’s a losing battle. The option of international courts has failed. China simply ignores D’ Hague and deals with our Presidents whom he believes he can manipulate.

There is one avenue of recourse that has hardly been exploited – persuading China that cooperation is better than domination. Tall order, you may say, but not really. How do we make China have a change of heart and use gentleness not force? Perhaps the key is balancing our benevolence with belligerence. Be gentle but be strong.

CONTINUED

There is the story of a big grumpy giant. When he enters the room, everyone cowers in fear. But a child approaches with a smile with no semblance of fear.

CHILD – Hi, would you like some candy?
GIANT – No.
CHILD – How about a piece of cake?
GIANT – No. Get away.
CHILD – Okay then. Let me see. How about we become friends?

She offers her hand and the giant, lonely for so long, feared by everyone, hesitates, then takes her hand, the beginning of a long lasting friendship. Eventually, the giant is no longer feared and gets more friends.

Lesson of the story – benevolence is just as contagious as belligerence. Even children can melt feared giants. When he gives you a stone, give him bread. If you give a stone back, he will get a bigger stone, but you have no bigger-bigger stone. You lose. Eventually, the giant will see that bread, not bullets, is the key to his own growth, cooperation breeds progress. That’s how a child wins over a giant. It’s not really a ‘win’, it is a win-win. Everybody happy. That is how we have to ‘educate’ China.

If you apply this lesson to relationship with China, perhaps there is a silver lining in the dark cloud that haunts us. Not everyone believes in the story of bread not bullets. They believe in an eye for an eye. But if you look back through history, an eye for an eye has spawned wars which killed thousands if not millions on both sides. Perhaps, there is a time to resort to bread-not-bullets rather an-eye-for-an-eye. Maybe there are creative ways we can think of like the child who ‘conquered’ the giant. We must look at the two options very well. There are two facets to China, the armed authoritarian and the gentle businessmen.

In the end, we must BALANCE our attitude to China. We must not let her abuse our goodwill.
It is a difficult tight-rope walk – be gentle with the giant but impose a limit to goodwill, if she abuses. Show benevolence and belligerence all at once. Be gentle but be strong.

The knee-jerk reaction of most of our Presidents to turn to America for help is the biggest blunder of all, to pit one giant against the other, because we are an ant sandwiched by two elephants. In the next Pacific naval war, carrier fleets may become useless. Hyper-sonic missiles with speeds of 10 to 20 times the speed of sound can neutralize an entire carrier fleet before it can react. China and the US both have hypersonics. They both also have ‘explosion-less’ EMP bombs that can paralyze all electronic devices in a large area, the total game changer. If one giant is cornered, the nuclear option is easy. One small nuke is needed, that is all, to trigger World War III.

Finally, we need to pray for peace. The Lord has ways we know nothing about in achieving such peace for us. How did David beat Goliath? It was the Lord who beat Goliath for him. So let’s pray for the Lord to give us a David, a win-win with Gotliath, China.

The Shroud of Turin is regarded through the centuries as ‘the relic of all relics’, the most powerful symbol of Christ’s suffering, revered through the centuries. The face on the Shroud is today the most intimate memento of the Messiah. It was a shock when it was proven to be a ‘hoax’ in 1988 by Oxford University scientists. A US team of 24 scientists, the SHROUD OF TURIN RESEARCH PROJECT (STURP), later proves that the carbon dating was invalid and was the hoax. STURP forensic pathologist Fred Zugibe gave scientific evidence that the stains on the Shroud came from ‘real blood’ of a human.

In 1978, the US research group STURP was formed to do the most thorough and scientific analysis on the Shroud of Turin. The goal was to answer the question – what formed the image on the ancient linen cloth?

In April 21, 1988, ten years later, carbon dating was done on the Shroud by Professor Robert Hedges of Oxford University. On October 13, 1988, the results stunned the world. In a press conference at the British Museum, where spokesman Teddy Hole proudly proclaimed that the Shroud was a fake, dated from the years 1260 to 1390 AD. The news spread like wildfire, dousing the fervor of millions of Christians worldwide, who regarded the Shroud as the relic of all relics, the most powerful symbol of Christ’s suffering.

STURP proved that the carbon dating was THE hoax, not the Shroud. First, it subjected the cloth to ultraviolet, infrared and x-ray imaging to disprove the claim of skeptics that the images were a ‘painting’. There were no lead or pigments present. It was not the work of an artist. In fact, forensic pathologist Fred Zugibe said the stains came from ‘real blood’ of a human. The images further revealed that blood had flowed from the forehead and scalp down the sides of the face, hinting that a crown of thorns was forced into the head.

The most damning evidence against carbon dating was the location of the sample. After a long debate, the carbon-dating team chose one ‘corner’ of the Shroud, the worst place to choose. The corners were the most handled part when the Shroud was strung up for display in 1578 in the public square at the Alpine town of Stenberry for many weeks. Bacteria-laden hands degraded the corners of the cloth. The ‘owner’ of the Shroud, Emmanuel Filberto, allowed the display for weeks for huge crowds, exposing it to sunlight and dust, nullifying further the carbon dating. Carbon dating is a sensitive process. The cloth, subjected to heat, nullifies carbon date.

In 6th century AD, precious relics in a silver ark under lock and key were moved from Jerusalem to a cathedral in Oviedo in Northern Spain, due to a Persian invasion. One item in the ark was a SUDERIUM, full of blood and bodily fluids. A ‘suderium’ was a poor-quality type of linen, which, according to Jewish tradition, was wrapped around the face of a dead man being prepared for burial to catch the blood and prevent dripping. A CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BLOOD ON THE SUDERIUM IN THE ARK MATCHED THE BLOOD ON THE SHROUD.

The Shroud revealed marks from multiple lacerations numbering about 100, believed to be done by scourging with the use of a whip having leather strips with metal balls or bones at the end. Professor Steven Matingly said that blood stains indeed created the image on the cloth. He simulated an elaborate experiment to show that blood on the bacteria-laden face formed images on the cloth, especially on the protruding eyebrows. He said this is a ‘natural event’, not a miracle.

The complex controversies surrounding the Shroud among believers and skeptics are based on centuries of Church history, such as the rise if the Knights Templar during the days of the Crusades and the invasion by the Saracens of the Holy Land. The Shroud found its final resting place in Turin, Italy, four centuries ago. The triumph of the Shroud as an authentic relic of all relics over those who were looking for a hoax and inadvertently ‘created’ a hoax in the process, exemplifies how Christ prevails over the machinations of men.

It is the work of the devil, to discredit the greatest relic of all relics showing the intimate physical form of the Messiah. The Shroud is not just a relic. It is a profound message to Mankind from Christ that indeed He died for us and for our sins.

The Village without Dogs or Chickens * We are all connected in a shrinking planet

THE VILLAGE WITHOUT DOGS OR CHICKENS
We are all Connected in a Shrinking Planet

Back in my days as a journalist in the 80s, I met a fisherman on a beach in a sleepy village in Mindoro, Philippines, who was cleaning five large shells. When he saw my eyes almost popped out, he smiled and led me to a small shed where he kept about 40 more shells. They were the precious CHAMBERED NAUTILUS, now an endangered species. (see photo).

g01 chambered nautilus

I interviewed him and discovered he had a spot in the open sea where he dropped a bamboo trap with a stone sinker and bait of dog meat. After a few days, he would catch two to three Chambered Nautiluses. A Chinese trader from Cebu would visit every month to buy about 150 to 200 shells from about a dozen or so fishermen. It was a thriving business that practically supported the entire village. The fisherman treated me to a sumptuous meal of raw Nautilus meat soaked in vinegar and laced with onions and chili. On the side, we had some local gin that scraped my throat and warmed by spirit.

The problem was, they ran out of bait. They finished all the dogs in the village and had to import from other villages. Dogs became precious, caged so they are not stolen. That was how it became a village without dogs.

Three decades after, I visited the same village again and saw many dogs, meaning Nautilus-trapping had died a natural death. They trapped the rare shell into extinction. For this tiny village, the economy shifted from tourist commodities back to farming.

The village now had a thriving garlic farming enterprise. Before the advent of garlic farming, chickens were all over the place. But they destroyed the young shoots of garlic when they would scratch the soil for food. So the farmers quickly ate all the chickens and banned roaming chickens in the entire village. Everyone ate fish instead.

Mindoro was then garlic country. They no longer planted native garlic because it grew too slow and the cloves were so tiny. They planted hybrid garlic with large cloves smuggled from Taiwan, which grew fast. The more aromatic native garlic finally died a slow death, but is still available today at higher prices.

The village with no dogs became the village with no chickens. If I were to visit this village again today, what will I find? My guess is no children. I am predicting I may find a village dying of hunger. Garlic would die if they cannot compete with other villages closer to markets with less transport cost. Meanwhile, there is less and less fish to catch. Their children would join the millions of OFWs out in the Middle East. The village would become a ghost town of elderlies, unless the children-turned-adults give back to their parents, capital not for consumption but for new sources of livelihood.

It is amazing how globalization has its tentacles in the remotest tiniest village, where there are sudden shifts in survival modes. Industries nourishing people die left and right, replaced by other industries nourishing another set of people.
