Mount Apo in Mindanao, tallest mountain in the Philippines, is home to a prehistoric mountain tribe, the Bagobos, who consider it as the sacred domain of their god, Apo Sandawa, keeper of the mountain, spiritual healer and guide.

As a journalist, I discovered the mystique of the Bagobos thru Datu Hirang, warrior and Babaylan (‘medicine man’ or herbalist-healer). He showed me a volcanic stone wrapped in cloth, hidden in the ceiling of his tiny hut. It was black, shiny, and smooth as glass, very heavy, perfectly egg-shaped but bigger in size. I began discerning the essential Bagobo through immersions and interviews.

He said Apo Sandawa told him in a dream to look for the power stone. After a year of roaming thru the rainforest, he found it lodged in the roots of a Balete tree, exactly as in his dream. He said Apo gave him the stone as a gift so he could heal people. One day, his stone was stolen by a jealous Babaylan. After a week, he came back, knelt before Datu Hirang and asked for forgiveness. Then did his week-old fever finally vanish.

I sat with Datu Ito, visionary and healer, for half a day as he walked me through quickly across centuries of Bagobo oral history. He said Apo Sandawa talked to him in dreams, giving him advice on how to handle crisis with lowlanders. The Bagobo dream culture awed anthropologists.

The sophisticated Bagobo herbal culture is ancient wisdom. They have herbs found only in Mt. Apo for all kinds of ailments, including cancer, they claim. Datu Ito complained that the herbs were vanishing fast due to the wars between soldiers and rebels. The soldiers would set forest fires to deny cover to the rebels. Some rare herbs unique to Mt. Apo are now extinct.

I suggested that I look for funds for a series of Bagobo safaris to collect endangered herbs, and put them in a nursery run by Bagobos. He was quick to warn me that Bagobos, for centuries, fear being invaded by lowlanders. If the lowlanders knew the secrets of their medicinal herbs, they would take over the mountain. Their ancient herbal science is handed down orally in utter secrecy only to direct descendants. There are no documents.

Datu Ito said the Bagobo herbal culture was dying because Babaylans were a vanishing breed. Their herbal knowledge die with them. The children they want to teach go to lowland schools and never return. I convinced Datu Ito to take the risk of written documentation, as long as they are held only by Bagobos. I wished I had the money and time to interview the last Babaylans scattered across around Mt. Apo and Mt. Kitanglad in Bukidnon. He said Apo Sandawa would be pleased if we could save centuries of herbal wisdom.

As Datu Ito rattled off herbs and the ailments they cure, I took notes feverishly. I suddenly stopped, realizing I was doing the first written documentation, defying centuries of tradition. I asked if it was alright. He smiled and said he trusted me.

Hit-and-run journalists like myself are eagles roaming the rainforests. Without institution or resources, we are helpless. Alas, I failed to raise funds. That was 30 years ago. Datu HIrang and Datu Ito must be dead by now, as most other Babaylans. That notebook of precious notes, a tiny portion of a vast wisdom, is now lost.

But who knows. Perhaps it is better that way, to save the Bagobos and their sacred mountain from lowlanders, rather than save their herbal culture. But eventually, I knew the crowded world would swallow or kill them. Like their herbs, the Lumads of Mindanao are an endangered species.

Datu Ito said Apo Sandawa was pleased with me as a friend of the Bagobos. My sudden intimacy with the thousand-year-old Bagobo mystique made me feel I was part of them. (Read sequel on the healing hot spring of Mt. Apo.)

U.S.-E.U. REFUGEE CRISIS LOOMS
The Enemy Within

Towards genocide and anarchy, and street riots.
Invasions in reverse – no planes no tanks, only refugee boats.
Is it an inevitable human crisis of biblical proportions?

This article does not take sides. It simply presents opposing views and the dilemma. The flowchart below of the looming human crisis is so simple, yet deadly and karmic, growing slowly everyday, ready to explode anytime into a global crisis.

REFUGEE CRISIS CHART – a vicious circle of hate

The ingredients to the inevitable human crisis are 1) invasions and indiscriminate bombings of the innocent triggering unstoppable migrations, 2) the terrorism/anti-terrorism vicious circle of vendetta. Before, it was an eye for an eye. Now, it is ten eyes for an eye. The ultimate victims are ordinary people – both migrants and citizens.

EU MIGRATION FLOWCHART (see more maps below)

Can we tell the terrorists to stop their acts which cause invasions? Can we tell the heads of states to stop invasions and bombings that cause migrations? From history, the answer is a resounding NO. Do they not see the obvious relation or are they blinded by anger? From history, THEY DON’T SEE IT.

The US and EU have a deep dilemma that is tearing their nations apart – how to deal with continued flow of Muslims in the largest most affluent Christian cities. On one side are the humanitarians who welcome them with open arms. On the other are those who fear being inundated by an Islamic flood.

Riots of pros and antis are growing in the US and the EU. There is a growing resentment even for peace-loving second-generation Muslims who have been assimilated citizens for decades. So its Germans versus Germans, and Germans versus migrants. When critical mass is reached, it will breed civil wars and anarchy on a large scale. Despair will seek inhuman solutions.

War is no longer an export. It is in your backyard, on your streets, an invasion in reverse which does not need tanks and planes, only refugee boats. The flow of refugees is the cosmic principle of equilibrium – heat seeks cold, poverty seeks affluence, crowdedness seeks space, oppression seeks freedom.

The One-night Millionaire and The Smuggler * A True Story * eastwind

THE ONE-NIGHT MILLIONAIRE AND THE SMUGGLER
Two Filipino Sailor in Athens
A True Story

This story is dedicated to the millions of OFWs scattered across Planet Earth.

This is a true story, with dialogue reconstructed and names changed. In the 70s, I was a daring adventurer, hitchhiking 25,000 kilometers for 18 months, drifting through 18 countries in Europe and North Africa. On my second day in Athens, I met two awesome Filipino sailors in Syntagma Square. Monching was throwing a giant birthday party. Kardo was smuggling blue seals and making a killing. I hope they, in their old age, if still alive, can read this and reply to me.

GREEK WAITER (dressed in all-white) – Hey you, Filipino!
ME – Hello.
GREEK WAITER – You Filipinos are the craziest people I have met ever.
ME – Really now. How come?

There were about ten waiters dressing up with white linen a long table about half a kilometer long across the entire square. It practically ended at the horizon.

GREEK WAITER – You see this table, 200 meters long all around? This table is for big shots like the city Mayor or a VIP. This table is expensive. Only rich people have their parties here.
ME – So?
GREEK WAITER – You see that crazy Filipino sailor over there?
ME – Looks normal to me.
GREEK WAITER – You don’t understand. He is a humble second officer in a Panamanian ship that just landed in Piraeus yesterday. He can’t possibly afford to hire this long table.
ME – If he is a Filipino seaman, he can.
GREEK WAITER – That’s what I mean. You guys are crazy. He saves his salary for five years.
ME – I would say ten.
GREEK WAITER – Then he spends it all in one birthday bash. He is inviting all Filipinos in the entire city of Athens, I mean all. Now, tell me he’s not crazy.
ME – I don’t think you would understand if I explained it to you.
GREEK WAITER – Try me.
ME – Well, okay. Filipinos have a different way of looking at things. Money is not everything. You work your ass off, that’s okay. But for a Filipino seaman, you earn money to spend it.
GREEK WAITER – I give up. You’re just as crazy. I wouldn’t kill myself for five years inside the belly of a lousy ship just for a birthday party. He’s crazy.
ME – I agree. He’s crazy alright. But in a nice way.  He likes a birthday bash. What can you say? I must meet this guy.
MONCHING – (I walk over to him.) – Name’s Monching. What ship are you from?
ME – Name’s Bernie. No ship. That waiter says you are crazy for having an expensive party.
MONCHING – (Laughing.) You only live once. You’re invited tomorrow night. All Filipinos are invited, no matter who – nurses, musicians, bar girls, consuls, whoever. Tell all Filipinos you know. Listen, I’m busy. You go talk to my friend Kardo over there.

I went over to Kardo. He had a huge duffel bag with him.

KARDO – What ship?
ME – No ship.
KARDO – I am in the US Navy. Big warship. What are you doing here?
ME – Not much. Just passing through?
KARDO – And you’re not a seaman?
ME – Nope.
KARDO – That’s strange. You must be a tourist. (Whispering furtively.) Listen, man, I need help. You see this?
Filipino seamen were not aware of Filipino drifters, hitchhikers, which were rare at that time. I did not bother to explain. He opened the huge duffel bag. I peered in and saw a ton of blue seal Salem and Winston cigarettes, green and red like Christmas decor.

KARDO – You help me. We sell this in the night bars. You get free drinks.
ME – You got about $2,000 worth in there, right?
KARDO – Shhh. Shut up. Five thousand. That’s just for this week. Unlimited supply.
ME – I bet. You have a friend in the commissary.
KARDO – Yes, Filipino also, my best friend. He gets 20%. Okay, okay, I’ll give you a commission.
ME – I’m not interested in a commission. I’d like the drink though.
KARDO – You’re on. Let’s go.
ME – You navy men are crazy.
KARDO – I smuggled Harley Davidsons in Corsica and Smith and Wesson in Rotterdam. I’m a businessman.
ME – You got anything in mind aside from making money on the side?
KARDO – Of course. Women. You want a woman tonight? On me.

I did not reply. So we went around the bars. I was amazed the bartenders knew him. He must have been smuggling cigarettes regularly for years. We had one or two free drinks in every bar. After about ten bars, we were dead drunk. The duffel bag was now almost empty. Kardo treated me to American steak somewhere. I could hardly walk. I couldn’t go home, so Kardo dragged me to his three-star hotel. Pretty good. I ended up with a hangover and missed Monching’s party. I could have met the entire Filipino community of Athens. Sayang.

while on the road
I met a lot of people in pain
at times, you cannot see the pain
it is hidden in Kardo’s friendliness
and Monching’s willingness to share
you have to learn to discern

beneath the millionaire kardo
I saw the pain of being lonely
holed up in the engine room of a ship for years
for monching, I could see the despair
for ‘business’ as a way to escape spiritual poverty
the same poverty I felt in new york
yet their pain was nothing compared to
those of others I met on the road

my three-year adventure in europe
gave me valuable lessons about life
I always prayed for the many people in pain
I met on the road, including myself
my adventure sanctified me
and lifted me out of the mire of spiritual poverty
all of a sudden, there was meaning, not absurdity

to all OFWs, hang in there
your sanity and sanctity
depends on being for others
the secret in discovering yourself
lies in discovering others

no one can live your life for you
gurus can only give tips
in the end you fly your own plane
you flap your own wings
you find your own path
in your own way in your own style

when you enter the dark forest
good and bad things lurk
to make and break your soul
take the chance, you will not regret it
darkness and light will encompass you
make the Lord your beacon
for He is the Light in your darkness
gather strength in His grace
and everything will fall into place
beyond your imagination

FATIMA LINKED TO PHILIPPINE EVENTS * Compilation of Fatima Centennial Articles * eastwind

I made a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Fatima, walking for 7 days and 80 kilometers from Lisbon to Fatima back in the 70s, sleeping in the open without a tent. I did it because I found life in New York City working as a Systems Analyst absurd. I was praying for light to help me find myself. My prayers would be answered 40 years later, when I would write many Fatima articles as a Marian journalist. My pilgrimage bore fruit. (Read about the 7-day pilgrim walk –
