Dear Mr. President, please, I beg you. You have warned the Lumads (Indigenous people of Mindanao) not to join the NPA rebels. You must also warn them not to join the AFP soldiers. The survival of the Lumads depends on their neutrality.

In the last two decades, the Lumads are being massacred into extinction. The AFP and their Baganis (Lumad CAFGU) kill Lumads who side with the NPA on mere suspicion. The NPA and their Lumad supporters kill Lumads who are known supporters or informants for the AFP. In the end, Lumads kill Lumads – Lumads for AFP and for NPA kill each other while the AFP and the NPA drink beer in their camps. The Lumads of Mindanao are now in deep crisis. They are caught in between. They become the pawns of either side in a never-ending war. The only way out is to stay neutral.

When the AFP kills pro-NPA Lumads, the more Lumads turn to the NPA for protection, the more the AFP kills them as their numbers grow. It is a vicious cycle of escalation. When the NPA kills Lumad informants of the AFP, the more they turn to the AFP for protection, the more the NPA kills them as their numbers grow. Lumads turn to kill each other in an eternal escalation until there are no more Lumads left. It has evolved into a ‘slow genocide’ in the last two decades.

You offered to give the Lumads livelihood if they join the AFP. The Lumads do not turn to the NPA because they are hungry. They do so because they are oppressed by the AFP. Poverty is not the cause. Your promise of livelihood is good, but it is not the solution. Livelihood will just be destroyed by the internal war.

There have been short-lived but successful civilian-led PEACE ZONES in Lumad territories in the past, as in the Arakan Valley, and Sagada. AFP and NPA are not allowed to go into these zones with arms. It was undermined by suspicions of violations from both sides. The peace zone concept can be revived, but there must be sincerity on both the AFP and NPA sides. This is the only hope for the Lumads in crisis. Otherwise, they become an endangered species.

Mr. President, you must do everything in your power to tell both the AFP and the NPA to stop recruiting Lumads. You can order the AFP directly, and suggest to the NPA through the peace talks. You must also revive the peace zone concept. If these last solutions are impossible, then the on-going ‘slow genocide’ is unstoppable. There will be no more Lumads.

On April 2007, 2017, North Korean President Kim Jong Un issued nuclear threats against the US and South Korea. This sent chills across the US and the globe because of North Korea’s recent capability to send nuclear missiles to the US continent. The Third Secret of Fatima prophesied Man’s capability to destroy the entire world many times over.

On June 5, 2017, just three months after the International Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima set foot on Korean soil 60 miles from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a first-ever event in the annals of the Korean Peninsula occurred – Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in suddenly reverted their war-stance. Kim declared “a new history of peace and prosperity”. Moon countered by saying, “We made a new beginning of peace for the Korean peninsula and the world.” There was a historic signing hailed by the entire world.

Surprisingly, there was a noticeable absence of the superpower. It seems peace is more reachable without an armed superpower hovering above, and SOKOR and NOKOR are left to themselves to forge peace. If the US withdrew its base in South Korea, totally feared by NOKOR, it does not need to have nukes to defend itself. NOKOR’s belligerence is based not on aggression but survival instincts, defense not offense. David wants to kill Goliath only to defend the Israelites. Of course, the US will not agree to withdrawing its base. So we are back in square one.

But Our Lady of Fatima has ways of achieving peace for us, if we only turn to her, just as her presence in the Korean DMZ made waves. Her ways are not our ways. All we have to do is to have faith and pray hard. The chances of a nuclear war in Korea is dependent not just on geopolitical events. It is also dependent on our prayers and faith. A return to the Lord can induce peace, and abandoning Him can induce wars, as demonstrated by the many stories in the Old Testament.

Kotuko-san, not his real name for privacy, demonstrates the true meaning of love. He is a Japanese human-rights lawyer who owns a Tokyo-based law firm. We became friends because we were both high-end adventurers in our youth. I boasted that I hitchhiked through Europe and North Africa for three years, covering 8,000 kilometers thru 18 countries. Over a glass of Merlot Red, he boasted back that he integrated for two years with Andean tribes who have never seen outsiders before. He crossed the Andes from Peru by foot until he reached the Amazon river basin. When the bottle of Merlot was finished, we were total friends.

Kotuko-san taught me interesting points of history, like the first wave of Japanese farmers fleeing the wrath of the ‘Hitler’ Meiji, the last Shogun, back in the late 18th century. The Japanese farmers put up the first hemp (abaca) plantations in Mindanao, and integrated with the Bagobos of Mt. Apo after World War II. Surprisingly, their descendant nisseis and sanseis (2nd and 3rd generation mestizos) are everywhere today, numbering about 20,000, their origins invisible to many. He came as a messiah to give these descendants papers to be able to work in Japan.

He was also a messiah for Japayukis who have returned homw from Japan. He was angry to discover that these women, with nissei children, were abandoned by their fathers who had Japanese wives. He wanted the fathers, mostly prominent businessmen, to support their abandoned nissei children and wives wallowing in poverty in the Philippines. He had a grand plan.

He traced the addresses of these Japanese fathers in Japan and sent them a simple legal notice to support their families in the Philippines or else a court case would be filed against them through his law firm. They were all in utter panic. A court case would destroy their reputations and businesses, and reveal their Japayuki mistresses to their Japanese wives.

Not one court case was filed. All of them surrendered to Kotuko-san like meek lambs bound for slaughter. Today, these ex-Japayukis receive support and their children are now professionals. Thanks to the Japanese messiah, who, today, still obsessed with adventure in his old age, goes around the world on a wheel chair.

Feedback from a reader that made my day -
Dear Bernie, This is so beautiful that I started to cry – so hard, I couldn’t finish reading it.  But I am here in spirit and thank you from the bottom of my heart for the spirit you transmit.  Bless you and bless you and bless you.  Please keep me in your link and as I work through my own defining issues, I hope to get clear enough to be more there for you. Sarah.

we all have a mission
to transmit our spirits to others
to lead them away from their crisis
without knowing their crisis

in whatever profession we have
teacher, writer, painter, musician, priest, doctor
we can make other people’s day
so easily if we share ourselves and our thoughts

a small inspiring anecdote
a piano piece we play
even just a half-hidden smile
we have that power to move and change others
