eastwind memoirs 06
By Bernie Lopez,

This is an overview of the entire 25,000-kilometer 3-year journey through 18 countries of Europe and North Africa (see 4 maps below), excerpts from the upcoming book Wings and Wanderlust. Although the book will be released in a few weeks, I am accepting orders by email early.
between reality and imagination
between relevance and absurdity
between joy and sorrow
between pleasure and pain
between euphoria and depression
between stratospheric highs and subterranean
is a lonely dangerous exciting road called freedom
I asked a PhD classmate, Dr. Manny Dy, who was teaching Eastern Philosophy at my alma mater, the Ateneo de Manila University, if he could have my manuscript for reading in his class. He agreed. Some of their comments are in the book’s back cover below. More comments at the end in Appendix One. Click photo to see entire book cover. This is not a trick shot but an acrobatic feat.

On the road drifting, I likened myself to an albatross, a fantastic global drifter, a primordial loner. It is the ugliest bird on the planet, but its stark beauty is spiritual.  It is the only migratory bird that can fly from the north to the south Polar Regions without stop, gliding with ease, not flapping a wing for days, sleeping for hours in flight below the stratosphere. It rides warm desert updrafts on a circular motion to gain a thousand meters of altitude within minutes. The albatross is the epitome of effortless wanderlust, seeing the sunset from above the clouds.

Satellite View of eastwind.

The extent of eastwind is best explained by four maps shown below. I wanted to go to Karthoum from Athens, but I was warned of danger in taking a free 12-day ride on the roof of a train from Cairo to Khartoum. I wanted to go to Tel Aviv, but I was warned there might be border problems. I wanted to take a 30-day camel caravan in the Sahara from Marrakesh in Morocco to Dakar in Senegal, but again I was warned that even men were raped in the desert. I loved danger but not that kind. I wanted to take the Trans-Siberian train from Munich to Vladivostok, but I could not afford it. No matter how bold and adventurous you are, money and a sixth sense for grave danger had a way of clipping wings.

Map No. 1. Brussels to Andorra

From New York, I flew to Brussels on a super-promo ticket of $220 round trip. I was apprehensive. It was fear of the unknown. But I was lucky. It took a lovely French Belgian stewardess on a rickety Citroen to break the ice in my hitching caper, my very first ride. From then on, I became the albatross, fearless and with the stratosphere as my domain.

Map No. 2. Andorra to Marseille

I worked as a construction hand in Andorra, the tiny freeport nation in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, a tourism destination. It was colder than Baguio City. I wanted to feel how it was to be a laborer, at the same time augment my money. Seeing how frail I was, the Catalan workers made sure I did not carry 50-kilo cement bags. They were extremely warm people.

In Spanish Sahara, when I crossed the border from Morocco, the border guards looked down on drifters as nothing but dirty bums. We were 14 backpackers at that time, French, American, Swedes, Canadian, Japanese, Australian, etc., and me, the lone Filipino. They searched our bags, and asked for proof of travel money. My American friend, a former NASA ballistic missile engineer (so he said), did not have money because his remittance was delayed. He could not pass through. When they saw from my passport that I was a Filipino, they got excited. I had a chance to use my pig Spanish. They let me through without inspection. I pointed at the American as my friend, so they let him through. It is nice to feel like a messiah. They became very friendly because the Philippines was once a Spanish colony. I told them without flinching, “Me voy para Islas Canarias, amigos.”

Map No. 3. Marseille to Amsterdam

Skopje in Yugoslavia, and Athens were highpoints. In a decade or so, the serene landscape I hitched through in this first-ever Eastern European country would become a bloodbath in the Serbian Wars. I stayed in the home of a Yugoslav girl, classmate in art school of my friend in Rome, Jimmy Hidalgo Resurrection, the artist. I had a violent argument with her dad who said religion was the opium of the people. He did not kick me out. Athens was my berth for the cold winter, singing in subways with an American flute player, more for fun than for money. I was extremely lonely on Christmas day without a family.

Map No. 4 Amsterdam to Amsterdam

Running out of money, I settled in Amsterdam and, after a short bout as a janitor in a restaurant, I had to endure in my old profession as a systems analyst, earning big bucks. I was doing FORTRAN programs crunching brain-wave arrays using a mathematical formula called Fourier Transform. Sorry for name dropping. It was a research on effects of new drugs on the brain. There were no PCs or laptops then, only IBM S/360s whose 100kb memory is a huge cabinet. I hated the job and lasted only about six months of torture, in spite of the good pay. My albatross wings grew back instantly. Sweden was memorable for hitching in sub-zero winter in the blinding snow, not to mention the lovely Swedish women who took care of me.

The Immigration Landscape
In the 70s, when I roamed Europe and North Africa, Filipino drifters were rare. Filipinos were and are still essentially hard working OFWs, not decadent drifters. I met only two Filipino hitchhiking adventurers in my three years on the road – a Paris-based artist I met in Amsterdam, and a drifter-turned-banker in Zurich. The latter said he hitchhiked with his brother who ended up in Sweden. Perhaps Filipino drifters who read this can email me so I can be proven wrong, and who have their own stories to tell.

Even the OFWs were relatively few compared to the millions today. During my time, if I remember right, for Portugal and Austria, Filipinos did not need a visa as long as they stayed only up to two weeks. For Switzerland and England, Filipinos needed a visa. For the rest, no visa was needed – Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, Andorra, Belgium, Netherlands, even Morocco, and Spanish Sahara. Because of the notoriety today of Filipinos being TNTs (illegal immigrants), one needs a visa everywhere today, as far as I know.

During the 70s, most of the OFWs I met were nurses or merchant marines or sailors. At that time, Filipino sailors had a reputation for having fake passports, that was why the police launched regular raids of hotels in Rotterdam and Hamburg, looking for ‘jump-ship’ Filipino sailors. The Filipino sailors were a fantastic breed of extremely colourful adventurers, risk-takers, danger-lovers, carefree and reckless. But I was different. They were working their ass off and they had money. I was the albatross soaring in the clouds, but I was frugal because my money was limited. But we were all first-class adventurers, and we all loved danger, that was the common denominator. After all, our nomadic roots were from the Austronesians from Burma who roamed the vast Pacific on makeshift boats long before the pioneer Phoenicians roamed the limited Mediterranean.

It took me two weeks of sleepless nights to write the book from memory and edited it for six months. amdg

Your prayer request is a form of prayer, because it implies you know He is listening. It will be more effective if you pray for others in this bulletin. Praying for others is praying for yourself a hundred fold. The more people pray, the more powerful our prayers.

The Mother Ignacia Prayer Warriors, with worldwide on-line members, are praying for each and every request in this bulletin, published regularly at We do not do automatic email replies. We read and pray for each prayer request. Subscribe as member at to get this bulletin automatically and to receive all inspirational materials.
Prayers are timeless and are never too late. If we pray for a successful operation even after the operation, the Lord listens in advance.
We are gathered in Jesus’ name in the internet. He is in our midst, on our keyboards, in our hearts at this very moment. Together, we are his global prayer army. We adore you, O Jesus, for You have redeemed the world.

Dear Sister Raquel,
my name is Christiane St, 38 years old, I´m a medical doctor and I´m writing form Germany.  Thank you of the possibility of writing to you! I read about your mission in the internet and saw some videos on youtube! Sister Raquel would it be possible for you to send me some healing oil per post? I would of course also donate for your mission. My address is on the bottom of this emal. Unfortunatelly I was forced to give up my work as a medical doctor in the year of 2007 beacuse of severe health problems concerning my verterbral spine with a burn out where I almost died, and so I had to quit working beacuse my health condition deteriorated severely with the consequence of general weekness, pain in the back, no strenght to do daily work. The chest feels very tightened, so that I even have problems in breathing, short of air. I´m leaving with my parents in the south of Germany at the moment and I´m pensioned. I started going to charismatical retreats in the year of 2007. The Lord already started healing me in the year 2010 and 2012, where I received physical healing, and I praise the Lord for his mercy and goodness! Nevertheless there remained blockades, and pain in the back , in the vertebral spine  due to the rotations and the tightness in the breast that still cause big pain and I have not recovered completely from the general weakness, it´s like I don´t have enough strenght to do daily work, I feel exhausted. I ask for your prayers for:
1) that my health may be restored completely, my strenght, vitality, force. Healing of the general fatigue and weakness. Also inner healing beacuse the past 8 years have been extremelly difficult.
2) Healing of my immunesystem and my hormonal system.
3) I also would like to get married. Please pray for a christian husband.
4) for a job, maybe I cannot work anymore as a doctor, I do not know what is God´s will, but any work for  me to be finantially independent . It is difficult because I haven´t worked for 6 years. In advance I thank you very much for your prayers and God bless you. Yours

Good morning!

Hi, I am a prayer warrior and this time, I have three requests to make, I hope and pray that everyone will help me in these requests:
1. Shawn Jacob Ca is a beautiful 12-year old boy in our Grade 7 class in Roosevelt College Cainta who died on August 8, 2013 because of an aneurysm. He had his attack on August 1, Thursday, after school, at about 4 pm while eating at McDonald’s with his classmates. He is so well-loved by his teachers and classmates. He is so active and intelligent, the only child. Shawn and his mother live with his mother’s mother, his grandmother. His parents are separated. Please pray for strength and acceptance on the part of his mother and grandmother, because as everyone knows he is now in the bosom of our loving Almighty Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and our Mother Mary and St. Ignacia del Espiritu Santo.
2. The grandson of our elementary school principal, Jericho M, will undergo a very delicate operation on August 20, where the surgeons will try to untangle blood vessels in his internal organs: liver, kidneys, etc from a hemangioma, which is a buildup of blood vessels in his internal organs that is not normal. His chances to live are small, but if we pray very hard, this 17-year old boy will be well and playing basketball again after he recuperates. His operation will be at St Luke’s Hospital where he will be confined in the charity ward.
3. My husband, Bayani, has acquired the Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterium and millions of bad bacteria live in his body as of now.  We do not know exactly where he got this from, but it’s probably through a catheter in a small hospital that did not have the right equipment when he had an emergency and we brought him there before the ambulance from UST hospital arrived to get him.  The bacteria is virulent and does not get killed by even the most expensive antibiotics. He is under the care of good doctors at the NKTI, but I pray you all to pray for him and for me because by God’s will, and with the intercession of Mother Mary and Mother Ignacia, the bad bacteria will be expelled and my husband will be well again. Thank you very very much for your sacrifices, intentions and prayers.God be with us always!

Dear Sister Raquel,
Please pray for Teofilo R., who is afflicted with Bullous Pemphigoid and is presently confined in a hospital. May God give him strength to endure his sickness; alleviate his pains and patience and faith that he will be “cured” of his sickness. God bless you,

Dear sister Raquel,
please take us in your prayer to our Lord and Mom Mary! Specially I ask help for my husband Bernd, he is very ill, after two cancers and he was sIx. missused in his childhood, after this he was depressive and it´s very difficult for him to feel loved…we need Jesus help, to set him and our family free, to feel all loved and to love each other! We are in a broken situation, my husband has been hurt in our catholic church, so he don´t go to the holy mass, before some months we allways go together with the children, now he is angry with our roman catholic church…he wants to go to the old catholic, but I am still staying in our church and work for the evangelisation! I feel so lost and broken in our marriage, need Jesus help! Lay this prayer request in Mom Marys hand, don´t now longer what should I do? I believe that Jesus can and will help us! I pray for new blessing for our lifes, marriage and family! May Jesus come back in our house and souls! Praise the Lord! Jesus is our Saviour! Thank you for praying! God bless you all!!! God bless and more power. fondly,

Make your request short and do not post repeatedly as it results in confusion and double entries we cannot monitor.
English is better so non-Filipinos prayer warriors can understand your prayer requests.
Put a subject title “prayer request” to avoid being identified as a spam. ‘No subject’ are sometimes not read but deleted.
We protect the privacy of requesters. Email addresses and last names are not published. This does not change the efficacy of the prayers.
The ministry mainly accepts prayer requests from individuals. We cannot accept a large stream of requests from a single source which has its own prayer grouping and forwards requests to us one by one. We cannot handle this kind of volume. We prefer the requests to first be consolidated into one document and sent to us a single request.
The Lord sanctifies all who reads this bulletin, prayer requesters, prayer warriors, and readers. When you read this bulletin, you will realize that perhaps your pain is nothing compared to those of others. Pain is an act of prayer if offered to the Lord. Pain sanctifies and may often be the Lord’s instrument to bring us closer to Him.
Physical healing– cancer and other terminal diseases.

Lord, we feel Your gentleness
in the flowers and the wind
but we feel Your rage
in the storms and earthquakes
You give and You take away
we bow in awe at Your feet
in surrender to Your will
forgive us our sins
blessed by Your name forever

A day before the millennium storm Haiyan (local name Yolanda) hit Samar and Leyte provinces, the original statue of Our Lady of Fatima, was last known to be in the town of Dolores, Eastern Samar, before communications were cut off. It is believed it was stranded there on its way to the capital of Borongan. Dolor is the Latin word for ‘sorrow’. Is this a new omen from Our Lady of Sorrows? (Source

Pope Francis received the statue from the church in Fatima during the Bohol-Cebu earthquake. He dispatched it to the Philippines. It arrived on September 16. In the crown of the statue is the bullet in a failed assassination of Pope John Paul II, the so-called ‘Fatima Pope’. The Third Secret of Fatima predicted the assassination attempt, and its failure was attributed to ‘Marian intervention’ on the Pope who consecrated Russia to her Immaculate Heart, which, in turn, as Our Lady of Fatima promised, ushered in global peace, triggering the Russian peace initiative détente, the end of the cold war at the break-up of the USSR, and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. The message of Our Lady of Fatima is both global peace and global disaster.

Fr. Kevin Apurillo, parish priest of San Joaquin, Palo, Leyte, gathered people into his church. Although the water was high, he said, “It’s a mystery how we lived through the storm.” This is akin to a small Jesuit community 100 meters from ground zero in the Hiroshima atomic blast who were left unscathed while they were praying the rosary. Fr. Kevin says victims must cling to God, as also articulated by the Book of Jeremiah below.

if at any time I announce
that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted
torn down and destroyed
and if that nation I warned repents of its evil
then I will relent and not inflict on it
the disaster I had planned
and if at another time I announce
that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted
and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me
then I will reconsider the good
I had intended to do for it
this is what the Lord says –
look! I am preparing a disaster for you
and devising a plan against you
so turn from your evil ways, each one of you
and reform your ways and your actions
Jeremiah 18:7-11

As of this writing, 5,200 are dead and 13 million homeless, and still climbing. There are 1,100 evacuation centers full to the brim, and another 685,000 persons who receive assistance outside the centers. (NDRRMC data).

In a knee-jerk plan, President Aquino wants to impose a no-build zone, banning homes in coastal areas, increasing easement from 20 meters to 50 to 200. This is an un-implementable plan. The Philippines has 36,300 kilometers of shoreline, greater than that of continental USA. In the Visayas, which is more archipelagic than Mindanao or Luzon, the estimate is half or 18,000 kilometers. Shorelines affected by Haiyan is estimated at about 3 to 4,000 kilometers. No one can police this vast area. As soon as people are forced out, a new set will come in. The plan will also reduce the fish productivity of the Visayas, which constitute 60% of total nationwide. We are an archipelagic people since prehistory. Either coastal people die from storm surge or from hunger. They will forever be nourished or killed by the sea.

but those who are wise will understand.
Daniel 12:10

and the Lord said to Jonah –
my son, you must understand that
when sinners repent
My wrath is quenched instantly
prophecies of punishment can be reverted
when there is a change of heart
My mercy abounds and overwhelms My anger
instant repentance obliterates
a mountain of sins
the slightest move of sinners
towards Me easily appeases Me
My mercy flows from one mere whispered prayer
at that time Michael, the great prince
who protects your people, will arise
there will be a time of distress
such as has not happened
from the beginning of nations until then
but at that time your people
everyone whose name is found
written in the book, will be delivered
multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth
will awake: some to everlasting life
others to shame and everlasting contempt
Daniel 12:1-2

A problem of distribution not supply
By Bernie Lopez

It is commendable that UN’s humanitarian chief Valerie Amos admitted that the rescue and relief speed is too slow. The tendency of Filipino government officials interviewed by CNN and other international media is to paint a pretty picture and not focus on the problems. CNN’s Amanpour cited many past cases elsewhere on this. Government pronouncements are contradicted by victims interviewed by media clamoring for food and water. The public has the right to get the naked truth rather than PR statements.

President Aquino’s verbal assurances must be supported by field data. He blamed local governments unable to respond quickly, silent on the culpability of the national government. He failed to realize the gravity of the situation by not ordering the military to launch mandatory evacuation days before the arrival of the storm. Instead, preparations were limited to refugee centers and relief goods.

It must be clarified that this is the only category 5 storm in human history. Katrina and Andrew were of lower categories. It is just logical that logistics will somewhat fail to cope with the massive devastation. We cannot blame the anger of people who remained un-serviced. The looting was caused by despair. The solution is not martial law but getting aid to move faster. The massive international support is in contrast to the logistical nightmare, which is now slowly being addressed. Is it possible that the policeman, who was sacked for telling CNN casualties may reach 10,000, might be right? If so, he must be commended and restored to his post.

Fatima warnings on a global disaster.

The global drought of 2012 triggered grain shortages on a massive scale – Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Australia, Mexico, to name a few. Instantly in the US, Soy, corn, and meat prices increased by 10% in July 2012. Grain shortages result in meat shortages. In the US, there is a media cover-up of looming meat shortages. The Ogallala Aquifer in the US, covering half a dozen states is reported to be shrinking fast. We don’t need a war to have a cleansing. Mother Nature will give it on a silver platter.

Food shortages trigger instant food riots, as in Benghazi, Greece, the supermarket raids in Spain. In the Tortilla Riot of 2007 in Mexico, 75,000 took to the streets, when wheat prices jumped overnight by ten pesos. In 2008, when food price indices soared, there were riots in 61 countries.

The catalysts to a global food shortage include a catastrophic meltdown of the US economy. A whopping 46 million are now on food stamps. Other catalysts include sustained climate-change weather aberrations, and the continuing leaks in Fukushima resulting in radioactive Pacific Ocean fish on a massive scale.

The most critical catalyst to food shortage is in the takeover by financial institutions in controlling food supplies and prices through speculative futures. Four years ago, 90% of food supply came from food corporations. Today, 40% are controlled by financial institutions. In 2012, Mexican President Felipe Calderon asked banks to stop speculating on food and grains, which have triggered social unrest. Jewish-controlled Wall Street actually caused the Arab Spring by purchasing wheat futures which triggered dramatic increase in prices in the Middle East. Finally, the American survivalist movement is growing rapidly, people stockpiling 5-year supply of food in their basements, in anticipation of a sudden panic-driven hoarding. They are protesting  against a new law giving the state the right to confiscate food stockpiles of citizens.

An omen of American food inflation is the rise of food prices invisible to consumers.  They do not change prices, only quantity. Kraft cheese has reduced a packet of 24 slices to 22. The 3 ounces of canned salmon is now 2.6. The 18 ounces of Skippy peanut butter is now 16.3. Lays chips have gone down from 16 to 14 ounces. This is to avoid food protests. (source -
