Brawl in a Border Village Bar – PORTUGAL

By Bernie Lopez, eastwindreplyctr@gmail.com

(The Filipino author hitchhiked 25,000 kilometers for 18 months, drifting through 18 countries in Europe and North Africa for 3. This is a true story, with the dialogue reconstructed.)

during the death march
in bataan in world war two
the soldiers who survived
were those whose only concern
was to place one foot in front of the other
those who looked up
the endless road ahead died of despair
myopia is sometimes a virtue
foresight a dangerous folly
especially in times of crisis and pain

At the first Portuguese village at the border of Spain and Portugal, Vila Real de San Antonio, I rested outside a bar. It was dusk. The evening was becoming royal blue against a cloudless sky.
The guitar was heavy. I peeked in. The bartender beckoned to me. He saw my guitar, my magic wand. I went in. I did not know it was easy to understand Portuguese if you spoke broken Spanish. With a little help from non-verbal communications, I felt at home in Portugal. There was an all-male group, all in different levels of inebriation in this crowded village bar.
The bartender pointed to my guitar. So I brought it in and took it out of the case. He told me to play a tune. I obliged. The drinkers, mostly middle- and old-aged, gathered around me, staring silently, waiting for me to open my mouth and strum the guitar. I did not have stage fright. I felt like singing. There I was singing a Filipino Christmas carol again weeks after Christmas, the same tune I played in Morocco for Vicky and her boy friend, Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit (Christmas is here). I thought the song would impress listeners as really ‘foreign’, really ‘eastern’. In reality, the minor chord progression was very Spanish in origin. It was also for lack of other songs to sing.
In the middle of the song, a huge mug of cold beer slid down the ramp and screeched to a halt in front of me, frothing with anger. Then a large salami sandwich came next. They knew I was hungry. After the first song, they shouted rowdily. They grabbed the guitar from me and one played and sang a sad Portuguese folk song while I ate ravenously.
That night, I had about six mugs of beer, something I had not done for a long time. It was a far cry from the meditative gofio of Lanzarote. I was out of Africa, back in Europe were alcohol was king. After that quiet cave, it was good to mix with the rowdy Portuguese who were more drunk than I was.
A guy put an arm around my shoulder. We both talked in broken Spanish. “Listen, my young man, where are you sleeping tonight?” he asked.
I shrugged my shoulder, “I don’t know. Perhaps in the park outside. I saw a nice park outside.”
His eyes widened in amusement. He laughed aloud until he choked. “You sleep in the park outside? That’s terrible. Nonsense, my young man. You sleep in my house tonight.”
         “You’re sure it’s no trouble?”
“No trouble at all. It is my privilege to have a Filipino for a guest. We never see Filipinos around here, you know.”
“Okay, muito obrigato.”, I did not remember if that was Catalan or Portuguese, but he understood and laughed.
         “Fine. I’ll see you later.”
He left to join others who were singing, or trying to sing. There were no videokes or karaokes then. I joined others who were trying to talk to me. Everyone had to shout to be heard. It was total pandemonium. Another guy called me aside. He almost fell on me.
“Where are you sleeping tonight, my friend?” he said.
“Someone offered me to sleep in his house.”
         “Who?”
I pointed to the guy who was by now trying to sing.
He said, “Sebastian? Nonsense. You’re sleeping in my house tonight.”
I shrugged my shoulders, “Doesn’t matter. Anywhere is fine.”
“No, you sleep in my house,” he insisted with finality.
         “Talk to him,” I smiled.
He marched straight to the other guy. They had an argument. The others were siding with one or the other. The chaos was reaching a climax. Then I knew it would happen. The two had a fist fight. One went down on the floor. The other dove at him and they grappled like children on the floor to the amusement of everyone. Everyone was shouting like they were in an American wrestling match.
I felt so privileged that in my first Portuguese village, people were fighting over me to sleep in their house. The feeling was nice. But if I did not leave, there would be a dilemma. I quietly took my guitar and was about to leave. The bartender saw me. I hush-hushed him and he understood. Quietly, I left and walked to a nearby park. The pandemonium vanished away slowly. Then there was a deafening silence.
I slept in the park. There was no rain. I preferred sleeping in the open alone rather than feeling rigid as a guest in a house whose host would certainly be over-hospitable. It was good I left. And it was also good they fought over me. That was something I would never forget ever, my first encounter with the boisterous and lovable Portuguese. The whole night, before sleeping, I was laughing aloud to myself like a lunatic. The Portuguese were very much like Filipinos, I thought, warm, over-hospitable, easy to befriend, noisy, unassuming, and reckless. Bernie Lopezeastwindreplyctr@gmail.com

every path is unique
no one can live your life for you
gurus can only give tips and guidelines
in the end you fly your own aircraft
you flap your own wings
you watch your own sunset
you find your own path
in your own way in your own style

when you enter the dark forest
good and bad things lurk
to make and break your soul
take the chance, you will not regret it
darkness and light will encompass you
make the Lord your beacon
for He is the Light in your darkness
gather strength in His grace
and everything will fall into place
beyond your imagination

On my second day in Athens, I wandered into Syntagma Square in the center of the city.

GREEK WAITER (dressed in all-white) – Hey you, Filipino!
           ME – Hello.
GREEK WAITER – You Filipinos are the craziest people I have met ever.
ME – Really now. How come?

There were about ten waiters dressing up with white linen a long table about a third of a kilometer long across the entire square. It practically ended at the horizon.

GREEK WAITER – (Moving his finger 360 degrees.) You see this table, 300 meters long all around? This table is for big shots like the mayor of the city or an important businessman. This table is expensive. Only rich people have their parties here.
ME – What does that have to do with crazy Filipinos?
GREEK WAITER – (Pointing to one giving instructions to other waiters.) You see that crazy Filipino over there?
ME – That’s the crazy Filipino? Looks normal to me.
GREEK WAITER – You don’t understand. He is a humble second officer in a Panamanian ship that just landed in Piraeus yesterday. He can’t possibly afford to hire this long table.
ME – If he is a Filipino seaman, he can.
GREEK WAITER – That’s what I mean. You guys are crazy. He saves his salary for five years and spends it all in one birthday bash. He is inviting all Filipinos in the entire city of Athens, I mean all. Now, tell me, what is the logic in all that?
ME – I don’t think you would understand even if I explained it to you.
           GREEK WAITER – Try me.
ME – Well, okay. Filipinos have a different way of looking at things. Money is not everything. You work your ass off, that’s okay. But for a Filipino seaman, you earn money to spend it.
GREEK WAITER – I give up. You’re just as crazy. I wouldn’t kill myself for five years inside the belly of a lousy ship just for a birthday party. He’s crazy.
ME – I agree. He’s crazy alright. But in a commendable way.  He likes a birthday bash. What can you say? I must meet him and get invited.

I walked over to him and he smiled upon seeing me, speaking in our native language,

MONCHING (Filipino merchant marine) – Name’s Monching. What ship are you from?
ME – Name’s Bernie. No ship. I’m not a seaman. That waiter says you are crazy for having an expensive party.
MONCHING – (Laughing.) You only live once. You’re invited anyway to my birthday tomorrow night. All Filipinos are invited, no matter who they are, what they are, nurses, musicians, bar girls, whoever. Tell all Filipinos you know. Listen, I’m busy. You go talk to my friend Kardo over there.

I went over to Kardo. He had a huge duffel bag with him.

           KARDO – What ship?
           ME – No ship.
KARDO – I am the US Navy. Big warship. What are you doing here?
ME – Not much. Just passing through?
           KARDO – And you’re not a seaman?
           ME – Nope.
KARDO – That’s strange. You must be a tourist.
Filipino seamen were not aware of Filipino drifters, hitchhikers, which were rare at that time. I did not bother to explain.

KARDO – (Whispering furtively, to make sure no one else hears.) Listen, man, I need help.
           ME – Yes?
           KARDO – You see this?

He opens the huge duffel bag. I peered in and saw a ton of blue seal Salem and Winston cigarettes, green and red like Christmas decor.

KARDO – You help me. We sell this in the night bars. You get free drinks.
ME – You’ve got about $2,000 worth in there, right?
KARDO – Shhh. Shut up. Five thousand. That’s just for this week. If I am not tired, next week again. Unlimited supply.
ME – I bet. You have a friend in the commissary.
KARDO – Yes, Filipino also, my best friend. He gets 20%. Okay, okay, I’ll give you a commission.
ME – I’m not interested in a commission. I’d like the drink though.
           KARDO – You’re on. Let’s go.
ME – You navy men are crazy.
KARDO – Of course, only way to be. This is nothing. I smuggled Harley Davidsons in Corsica and Smith and Wesson in Rotterdam. I’m a businessman, sailor on the side.
ME – You got anything in mind aside from making money on the side?
KARDO – Of course. Women. You want a woman tonight? On me.

I did not reply. And so we left Monching, fixing up his birthday party, and went around the bars. I was amazed the bartenders knew him. He must have been smuggling cigarettes regularly for years. We had one or two free drinks in every bar. After about ten bars, we were dead drunk. The duffel bag was now almost empty. Kardo treated me to American steak somewhere. I could hardly walk. I couldn’t go home, so Kardo dragged me to his three-star hotel. Pretty good. I ended up with a hangover and missed Monching’s party. I could have met the entire Filipino community of Athens but I had a splitting headache from retsina, the Greek wine which smelled and tasted like aviation gas to a Filipino. eastwindreplyctr@gmail.com

Our dearest prayer warriors and Sr. Raquel,
I am a mother of two very young boys, ages 5 and 11. Last night I was on a desperate call begging our Lord in my prayers, to instantly take this illness away … wash and cleanse me off of these cancer cells by the most precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ because I BELIEVE that God can also take this sickness away as suddenly as it came. I have been so grateful in my prayers for my husband who has been very sick much longer than I have been. He has a tumor in the brain that caused him to have a mild stroke in December of 2009.  I also have my father who has been suffering for 3 years now from a chronic illness that has incapacitated him for a long time. Please pray for all of us. I realized when I was diagnosed for breast cancer stage 2, maybe God wants me to stop and think for a while and start caring for myself somehow. Thank you Lord for the blessings you shower us with everyday. Mother Mary, mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, help us and keep us from all the wicked enemies.
JENNY

For Pauline who is going tomorrow to get the results of her lung scan. Jesus in Your mercy, please be merciful to Pauline. For Erika ( 21 years old) who had a mammogram done on Monday and now has to have an emergency cat scan done this Friday. For a very, very special intention. APPENDIX 1

PRAYER REQUEST PROTOCOL.
1
Make your request short and do not post repeatedly as it results in confusion and double entries we cannot monitor.
2
English is better so non-Filipinos prayer warriors can understand your prayer requests.
3
Put a subject title “prayer request” to avoid being identified as a spam. ‘No subject’ are sometimes not read but deleted.
4
We protect the privacy of requesters. Email addresses and last names are not published. This does not change the efficacy of the prayers.
5
The ministry mainly accepts prayer requests from individuals. We cannot accept a large stream of requests from a single source which has its own prayer grouping and forwards requests to us one by one. We cannot handle this kind of volume. We prefer the requests to first be consolidated into one document and sent to us a single request.

THE ESSENCE OF PRAYER AND PAIN

The Lord sanctifies all who reads this bulletin, prayer requesters, prayer warriors, and readers. When you read this bulletin, you will realize that perhaps your pain is nothing compared to those of others. Pain is an act of prayer if offered to the Lord. Pain sanctifies and may often be the Lord’s instrument to bring us closer to Him.

PREDOMINANT PRAYER REQUESTS

Physical healing– cancer and other terminal diseases.
Spiritual healing– depression, confusion, loss of faith.
Relationship healing – friends and family quarrels, separations, conflicts.
Financial rescue– unemployment, exams, businesses, medical expenses.

For the sick, request for healing oil for free by postal mail. Just give your postal address to sr.raquel.rvm@gmail.com. But first read about its history, healing oil that appeared miraculously a day before Ondoy-
