THE FATIMA CHRONICLES

Part 1. Myths about the Third Secret

This is the first of two parts celebrating the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun on October 13, 1917, which marked the climax of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima before the first two world wars. The article uncovers the myths perpetrated by anti-Marian and atheist groups, and clarifies its true message.

On October 13, 1917, 70,000 rain-drenched people gathered at the Cova da Aria in Fatima to view a miracle promised by Our Lady. “Then all saw the clouds part, and the sun appear like a great disk of white fire”. The visionaries related later that “she was crowned, and the Infant Jesus stood on her knee.” She appeared as Our Lady of Sorrows, then as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. (Bro. It is strange how the Third Secret of Fatima is today surrounded by deceptions and attacks that undermine its true message. For example, a History Channel documentary claimed that part of the Third Secret is still secret, that only 25 of the 62 lines of the original manuscript was revealed. This is not true. The Fatima messages are the subject of attacks from anti-Marian groups, who do not believe we should pray to Our Lady. They say that praying to Our Lady is a form of idolatry. Marian devotees, however, explain that they pray to Our Lady not as a God, but as a human bridge to God, a mediatrix.

Another deception is an email that has been circulating for years, saying one must buy blessed candles to be spared. Only blessed candles can be lit during the three days of darkness, none other. The blessed candles are not part of the original Fatima messages. The intent is to distract us and make us focus on external rituals so that we forget the essence of the message, namely internal spiritual transformation, a return to the Lord through prayers and penance, which will save us from calamity, not the lighting of candles. The misleading email is littered with intertwining quotes and sub-quotes, until you can no longer distinguish what Our Lady is saying and what the anonymous author is adding. It is an ingenious subtle form of deception. Is this the work of the devil?

It speaks of “a great earthquake ten minutes before midnight going for eight hours and will tilt the earth’s axis 23 degrees”. There are no such exact scientific data in the Third Secret. Although the intent is to strengthen the true Fatima message of repentance to avoid punishment, people become more skeptic if such detailed prophecies are not fulfilled. The email says, “once (God’s punishment) has started, you should not look outside under any circumstance!!!!”. The intent of the deception is to instill the wrong kind of fear, fear of penalty for transgressing a meaningless rule. True fear of the Lord involves prayer and penance.

Sister Lucia writes, “We saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendour that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand. Pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!’.” This passage simply explains that Marian intervention can save the world from disasters and God’s wrath, but only if we return to Him.

The real reason why many Popes did not reveal the Third Secret was not so much because it might cause panic because of the scary prophecies (the First and Second Secrets, with its vision of hell, were more scary). It was more because the Third Secret cites “a Bishop dressed in white”, referring to a Pope, who would be assassinated. The Popes from 1917 to 2002 simply found it indiscrete to reveal such a horrible event. Sister Lucia later confirms that the Bishop in white was Pope John Paul II.

Marian Intervention

Our Lady intervened in this prophecy of assassination. There were two failed assassination attempts against Pope John Paul II circa 1981. In an official Vatican report, Archbishop Emeritus of Vercelli, Tarcisio Bertone, SDB, wrote that the Pope was saved by “a Mother’s hand that guided the bullet’s path”. Pope John Paul II later gave the bullet to the Bishop of Leiria-Fatima who placed it in the crown of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

Fatima scholars in the Vatican reported that the Cuban crisis of 1961, the closest Mankind had to a nuclear confrontation at that time, was another such Marian intervention. Those who do not believe in Marian devotion argued that there were no such interventions. Events simply happened. Belief in Marian intervention is based on personal faith. One is not obliged to believe, even if many Marian devotees do.

Another Marian intervention posed by Fatima scholars was a critical geopolitical event – the end of the cold war era. In 1981, Pope John Paul II consecrated Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was Our Lady’s request in earlier messages, as a precondition for world peace. After that, for the first time, a Russian Leader, Gorbachev, visited the papacy, where he was touched by his dialogue with Pope John Paul II.

Three important events ensued. First, Gorbachev instituted détente as a unilateral policy towards establishing peace with the West. This led to the eventual break up of the Russian empire, and the end of the cold war. Second, Gorbachev opened up the churches in Russia and ended decades of suppression of both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Third, the break up of the Berlin Wall in 1989 signaled the last of many events easing tensions between the U.S. and Russia, ingredients to a perceived new war. Our Lady said in Fatima, “If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace.”

THE FATIMA CHRONICLES

Part 2. The Truth behind the Third Secret

This is a personal true account. As I prayed with Sister Eva Maamo, an RM awardee, at the home of the visionary of Our Lady of Grace in San Francisco del Monte, she went into a sudden convulsion and trance. Instantly, her voice changed to a deeper tone. She said “I can no longer hold off the hand of my Son. Pray, pray, pray.” My hair stood on end. There was urgency in her voice. This sums up the true message of the Third Secret in all its simplicity, beyond all the myths and deceptions. Our Lady is trying hard to prevent disasters falling on us, but we seem indifferent.

Is God ready to strike or to forgive? Who will prevail, the God of Wrath or the God of Mercy. In an interview by Fr. Agustin Fuentes in 1957, Sister Lucia said, “”Father, the Most Holy Virgin did not tell me that we are in the last times (end times in modern apocalyptic jargon) but she made me understand this … because she told me that the devil is in the mood for engaging in a decisive battle against the Virgin. Hence from now on we must choose sides. Either we are for God or we are for the devil. Believe me, Father, God is going to punish the world and very soon. The chastisement of heaven is imminent.”

Our Lady said at Fatima, “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.” This would be in fulfillment of the biblical statement that a Woman clothed with the sun would crush the head of the serpent. The youngest visionary, Jacinta, adds, “The future of humankind is in God, and that we are active and responsible partners in creating that future”. (Bro. Ernest, CSC).

Our Lady showed the children visionaries a horrifying vision of hell where “souls were being tormented by frightful devils… Our Lady (right after the vision) said to the children, ‘…if (people) do not stop offending God… He is going to punish the world for its crimes by means of war, of hunger, and of persecution of the Church … You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the Pontificate of Pius XI.’” (Bro. Ernest, CSC).

The ‘war (which) is going to end’ referred to World War I. The ‘worse one’ referred to World War II. It seems there were no Marian interventions in these two great world wars where millions died. And a third world war that would eclipse the first and second is not impossible, if we listen to the warnings of Our Lady.

The Big ‘If’

Marian intervention and the theology of sin and punishment simply teach us that prophecies have a big ‘if’. They are premised on the fact that Man fails to return to the Lord. If Man returns to the Lord, prophecies of disasters can be reversed or even deferred.

Take for example the prophet Jonah. The Lord told him to tell the people of Nineveh, the affluent New York City of biblical times, that the city would be destroyed, if they would not repent. Nineveh repented and returned to the Lord, who spared the city. The opposite occurred in Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord said that, if there was but one holy person remaining, He would spare the twin cities. There was none. He destroyed them in fulfillment of the prophecy.

A case in point is 9-11. God can actually permit dire events to happen as a message for Man’s pride. The similarity of the twin towers of New York to the twin towers of Babylon is awesome. They are both twin towers. They both represent the sin of pride, the arrogance of Man believing he can do without God. Many cannot see 9-11 as a message and warning from the God of Wrath. It is more than just a crime by terrorist enemies against America. The message was for the entire humankind.

The increasing frequency and intensity of disasters lately tend to point to the God of wrath overwhelming the God of mercy – Katrina, Irene, mega-tsunamis in Japan and Jakarta, mega-earthquakes in Peru and China, floods and forest fires everywhere, powerful weather disturbances due to climate change, new threats of bird viruses, and so on.

Today, the averted conflict with Russia is being replaced by a new conflict with the Arab communities. Israel with the US, Iran with Syria are easily the core of a new powder keg, which may be the beginnings of World War III. World wars ferment rapidly when nations polarize against each other into two opposing forces. For example, China and Russia can polarize with the Arabs in the name of oil and gas. In the future, all that is needed is a small short fuse, when all of us are asleep.

Can we still avert disasters? Can we still invoke Marian intervention through prayers and penance? Can Our Lady still hold off the Angel with the flaming sword and the hand of her Son? Or are we hopelessly now in the era of the ‘end times’? It is all up to us. Only Mankind’s actions can change the big ‘if’.

The God of Wrath speaks, “There will be blood and fire. The sun will be turned into darkness, the moon into blood. On the great and terrible day of My coming, all who call on My name shall be saved.” Joel 3:1-5. And the God of Mercy speaks, “Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting weeping and mourning. Rend your hearts, not your garments. Return to me your Lord your God. For gracious and merciful am I, slow to anger, rich in kindness, relenting in punishment.” Joel 2:12-13.

Marian intervention and the war with Satan are summed up in the bible, “A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun. She was with Child, wailing in birth pains. Another sign appeared in the sky, a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns. The dragon stood before the woman, to devour her Child. She gave birth to a Son, destined to rule all nations. Julia is a music student at a prestigious Music Conservatory. It has been her dream to be a concert flutist, so she works hard two hours everyday practicing, unlike her classmates who do the minimum required of one hour a day. She practices on the flute instead of joining her music classmates for a movie. They tease her for being too serious and not having fun anymore. She is not bothered. Only her dream keeps her going.

Jeremy, her best friend, is not a music student. He is taking Fine Arts. However, having a good ear, he has learned on his own how to play the flute. He is a jazz enthusiast and plays the flute with songs in his computer for hours until he has mastered many songs. At first, he copies the flute improvisations. But later on, he starts experimenting with his own improvisations. That is the jazz culture – ad lib, off the shoulder, just let yourself come out, use your heart, not your mind.

Julia’s classical culture at the conservatory is very different. There is only strict discipline. One never improvises. One simply reads and follows notes. It is like a beacon leading one to a beautiful garden. The notes guide her. Sure, she emotes the music she plays, as implied in the score. She can pick that up instantaneously. But she is not allowed to improvise. This is the classical culture – discipline, notes, blind obedience, use your mind, not your heart.

Julia and Jeremy are best friends but they never play flute together because they come from two contrasting seemingly-irreconcilable cultures. They share campus life but not music. They cannot play together. Sometimes they quarrel. Music-wise they live in different worlds. There is a deep chasm between them. But only in music. They are always the best of friends.

JULIA

You see. It’s the way you pucker your lips. The sound is different. The timber of the note comes out different from the way you pucker your lips and the angle of the mouthpiece to your lips.

Julia demonstrates briefly her technical point with her flute to produce different timbers of the same note.

JULIA

You understand what I am trying to say?

JEREMY

Yeah, yeah, whatever. I don’t care about timber. I just play and concentrate on the next chord, the next arpeggio.

JULIA

Oh, so you know a bit about arpeggios. That’s a classical term.

JEREMY

You sound snobbish. Jazz musicians know about arpeggios. We are not naïve. It’s simply playing the notes of a chord up and down. That’s nothing.

JULIA

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be a snob. I just thought Italian music terms are exclusively for classical.

JEREMY

Now you know. But you know what your problem is?

JULIA

What?

JEREMY

You are buried in your musical score. You are like an ostrich burying itself in the ground. You cant’ express your own thing. You express another person’s thing. You can’t play without a score.

JULIA

And you can’t play with a score, right? What’s wrong with another person’s thing. Can you compose like Chopin. Can you be better than the great composers?

JEREMY

I don’t have to be better than a great composer. I have my thing. It may be less better than Chopin’s but it is mine.

JULIA

Don’t say ‘less better’. Say ‘worse’.

JEREMY

Not the same thing, Julia. ‘Less better’ is better. It’s me playing, not Chopin. It is me. Okay, it’s my turn to demonstrate. Give me an arpeggio in E flat minor.

JULIA

Well, we’re not yet there. I can give you an arpeggio in C or D diminished.

JEREMY

That’s what I mean. You are so concentrated learning the thing of others, you do not have the skill to make your own thing. Let me show you.

Jeremy demonstrates the arpeggio in E flat minor. Julia watches the fingering, trying to learn it, but it is too complex for her to follow instantly.

JEREMY

Now, let’s add another arpeggio in D flat and we instantly have a song without any scores.

Jeremy moves rhythmically from E flat minor to D flat and begins to play a ‘song’.

JULIA

Where did you get that song? That’s a nice one.

JEREMY

I just played it for the first time just now. You see, in jazz it’s a matter of chords and their arpeggios, the flow from one to the other that makes a tune. You simply choose your notes instantly as the chords change. It’s like walking on a fence and keeping your balance.

JULIA

Really. Wow, that’s great. I want to learn that. But no, sorry, my teacher won’t let me. We are not allowed to improvise. The teacher says it will destroy our discipline. For us, the chords are dictated by the score, period.

JEREMY

So you see, jazz flutists have more freedom than classical flutists.

JULIA

You’re the one sounding like a snob this time. It’s not a matter of freedom. It’s the quality of the song.

Their voices start to go on high pitch, arguing on technical terms the other knows nothing about.

JULIA

How about some ice cream at the canteen?

JEREMY

Good idea. Let’s.

They pack their flutes into their cases, and walk together in silence.

JULIA

I think we should never talk about music again. Let’s just do anything else. It’s not fun anymore when we argue.

JEREMY

Well, let’s do this. Let’s argue with our flutes, not with words. You play for me and I play for you.

JULIA

That would be fun.

And so things get better between the two flutists. They spend sunsets at the empty football field, away from the crowds, and one plays, then the other. Their music echoes across the campus. From afar, they hear the applause and they bow. The contrast of their music is amazingly beautiful, complex German measured precision versus Brazilian wanton disharmony.

They start to draw a crowd. Every sunset, a group of students would hang around without coming near, so that the flutists do not feel so conscious. They simply applaud from afar. The sunset concerts become regular. But they always play solo, one after the other. After the last quarrel, they have never argued anymore. The just play and play, until one day, notes once more shift into words spontaneously.

JEREMY

We’re doing it wrong. Why do we stick to each other’s world? Isn’t music one world?

JULIA

Yeah, you’re right. Maybe we should try to blend our contradicting worlds.

JEREMY

How? I don’t know. Maybe there are too many contradictions.

JULIA

Of course not. Okay, let’s do it this way. You tell me what you are doing well that I can’t do, and vice versa. Then we teach each other. I teach you classical discipline. You teach me jazz improvisation. What do you think?

JEREMY

I was actually thinking of that when you were playing. How come your notes and rhythm are so precise? And now I am beginning to know the importance of timber. It does make a lot of difference. I mean, the quality and the projection.

JULIA

Easy. I practice two hours everyday. Do you?

JEREMY

Of course not. I play when I want to, when I feel like, when I am in the mood.

JULIA

See, you depend on your mood. I depend on the score sheet. Is there a way we can teach each other?

JEREMY

Sure. You teach me how to read notes. You teach me precision in timing.

JULIA

And you teach me chord progressions so I can write my own songs. Give me five, brother.

The slap of their hands is so hard, echoing across the football field. They laugh so loud that their audience laughs with them. Jeremy beckons their audience to come nearer. They come, about a dozen of them, forming a circle around the two.

JULIA

Ladies and gentlemen, I am Julia. This is Jeremy. We are here to try to stop playing solo and start playing together.

JEREMY

Hmm. I don’t know. It will take a lot of sessions before we can do that. And our audience may get bored when we are teaching each other rather than playing for them.

TEENAGE GIRL 1

Same thing. Either way, it’s music, right?

JEREMY

I suppose so.

TEENAGE GIRL 2

So play play play. Don’t mind us. Just think we are not here.

JULIA

No. We have to know you are there, because we no longer play for each other. We also play for you.

There is a round of applause. Jeremy plays Bluesette solo, a complex jazz standard. Julia plays Bach’s Bourree in E minor solo only because it influenced Paul McCartney to write the song Blackbird. Then they start teaching each other. After awhile, the crowd would disperse. Julia and Jeremy would stay until it was dark. Julia would teach Jeremy how to read notes using a flashlight. Jeremy would teach chord progressions for simple jazz standards.

That becomes their routine in the daily sunset concerts. They play one to three songs each solo. The crowd would disperse and they have their lessons. It is the exchange of the classical mind and the jazz heart. Sometimes they have bananas for dinner because the canteen is closed.

For the first time, they try to play a classical duet together. Jeremy is fast picking up notes. For the first time, they also try to play a jazz piece together where one flute is ‘conversing’ with the other. They get a good round of applause. The crowd is becoming bigger. One day, the security guard comes over. Everyone is silent. He does not stop the concert. He wants to listen. So every night, students and guards come together for the concert.

Little do Jeremy and Julia know, that in marrying two different worlds into one, they would one day reach fame and fortune. The Conservatory sponsors their concert in a jam-packed auditorium. The Conservatory in fact sets up a new division on jazz music, where Jeremy is the first professor. Then they burn their first CD, then the next and the next, until their names echo in the concert halls – ‘Jeremy and Julia’. They limit their sunset concerts to Fridays, the only day the school permitted such a gathering of thousands. They had a stage and microphones, and others came in with their portable keyboards, electronic drums, guitars, and singers. It is a big affair but they never charge a cent. Several times, the TV stations would come and cover them live, giving them a car each as a gift for not charging a cent. The ‘Jeremy and Julia’ legacy becomes forever.

Greetings from one of your Prayer Warriors! First, I would like to extend my gratitude for another granted prayer for my brother-in-law in Bahrain whom I requested to be saved from the chaos there. I am writing once again because I fervently need a help in praying for my nephew, Isa. He was born with a lump on the back of his head so he went into surgery few days after his birth. Dear Sis. Racquel and the Prayer Warriors of the Mother Ignacia Healing Center, Peace in Christ! My name is Analyn D. I heared of your Healing Ministry through Radio Veritas. I would like to request healing prayers for my mother Lydia D. She was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis and Diabetes. She was coughing out blood due to lung infection and thin lining in the bronchial tube. Everytime she has bleeding I feel so scared. The doctor is considering operation but she is already 68 years old. Please help us through your prayers. I am always full of fear and I cannot even focus on my work in the office. I don’t know how to face the challenges of each day. I feel so depress and I find it hard to eat. We also have a special brother to take care of aside from my nanay. We are in deep debt because of my mother’s hospitalization and medication. I cannot report to work regularly especially when my nanay has bleeding. Sometimes I feel like giving up. My only strength comes from praying the rosary everyday and hearing mass as often as I can. The Lord Jesus is our only hope for nothing is impossible with Him.Through the powerful intercession of the Blessed Mother and through Sis. Good day and peace . I have come across your healing ministry in the internet. I believe, God has paved the way for this. I am a wife of an OFW who works in Saudi Arabia. We have to deal with the pain of being away from each other so as to send our kids to school and have a better life. Anyway, I wish to request for the complete healing of his heart ailment. Every year during his vacation we go to the cardiologist to give him tests and they give him maintenance medicines which we feel doesn’t really help him. One option given was angioplasty or open heart surgery if the need arises after angiogram tests. But the procedures would cost P700k to P1M pesos. which, we do not have. I want to grow old with my husband and dream of the day we will be together when he retires, after our youngest finishes college in a few years. I would therefore request for prayers for the complete healing of my husband Jose D. Cruz , Jr. I know that God is kind and merciful , and through your help and the prayers of Ven. Mr. Ignacia, he will be healed , in God’s most beautiful time. We will also try to visit the healing center when he comes home in march to april, 2012. I have heard about this last night, when i listened to Radio Veritas. May I also request prayers for my seminarian son James Raphaelangelo C. He is now in 4th hear high school, (minor seminarian). Ako po si Brett, 21 taon gulang, male, taga Manila po. Natuklasan po ng mga doktor na mayroon akong rare na heart condition na tinatawag na Myocarditis. Natamaan po ng virus ang aking puso at ito ay mahina at namamaga. At risk po ako for sudden death hangga’t may damage pa puso ko. May mga gumagaling sa sakit na ito, pero mayroon rin pong hindi gumagaling at namamatay pagkatapos ng ilang taon. 2 months na po at wala paring signs of improvement sa condition ko. Honestly, di ko po talaga alam ang kapalaran ko ngayon. Desperado na po ako. Di po ako naniniwala sa Diyos dati. Pero noong Sept.18 ay naramdaman ko ang “kalabit” ng Diyos. Kakaiba po ang pakiramdam at alam kong hindi itong ordinaryong pangyayari. Simula noon ay naniniwala na ako at taus-puso na akong nagdarasal sa Panginoon. Masasabi kong nasa tamang oras lang nagparamdam ang Diyos dahil nasa matinding kalungkutan ako sa panahon na iyon at malaki ang chansa na magka-cardiac arrest kung gayon. Humihingi ako ng patawad kay Kristo araw araw dahil hindi ko siya kinikilala bilang parte ng buhay ko dati. Humihingi rin ako ng isa pagkakataon sa kanya upang gumaling sa sakit na ito at mabuhay bilang intrumento niya sa kinabubutihan ng sanlibutan. Gusto ko nang tumulong sa kapwa. Ayokong maranasan ng iba ang nararanasan ko ngayon. Gusto kong iparamdam rin sa kanila ang pagmamahal na Diyos bago sila umabot sa punto ng malubhang sakit o desperasyon. Sana bigyan ako ni Hesus ng pagkakataon para gawin ang lahat na ito. Pinuntahan po ako ni Mother Remedios noong Sept. 20, 2011. Malaki po ang pasasalamat ko sa kanya.
